Father with terminal brain tumor stabs teen son to death because he felt wife wouldn’t be able to raise him alone
A 40-year-old man, who was diagnosed with terminal brain tumor, reportedly killed his 13-year-old son because he felt his wife would not be able to raise the boy after his death. The man, identified as Oleg Drachev, also attempted to stab his wife. She, however, managed to lock him in the bathroom and called authorities for assistance.
Drachev was subsequently detained on suspicion of murdering his son, Ilya, while the boy slept in the family home in Moscow. The identity of the mother has not been revealed. The family was known to be happy and devoted until the day the father, a design engineer, was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor, according to the Mirror.
Drachev reportedly loved his son dearly and spent all his spare time with, the devastated family members said. The pair went swimming and hiking together, and also constructed outbuildings at their summer house, including a kennel for their dog, reports state.
Drachev, while talking to the detectives, said he feared no one could take his place in raising his son after he died, and he did not see how his wife would bring up the child and pay their mortgage all alone. After deliberating, he stabbed his sleeping son after the mother had gone to work.
The mother reportedly rushed home when they did not answer phone calls and eventually broke in through a window and found her son dead in bed, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported. Drachev then attacked her too with a knife, however, she fought back and locked him in the bathroom.
"You cannot even imagine how he loved his son," Drachev's mother told the outlet. "He never punished him. Mostly his mother told him off. But after the cancer diagnosis, he went crazy.”
Drachev is currently undergoing an examination at a secure psychiatric hospital in Moscow.
