'Supergirl' season 5 episode 2 preview: 'Stranger Beside Me' may focus on Malefic and J'Onn's fractured, violent relationship

The upcoming episode, 'Stranger Beside Me' may probably explain the relationship between the two while also incorporating some elements of the Kara aka Supergirl and Lena Luthor relationship.

'Event Horizon' ended by introducing a potential foe to J'Onn J'Onzz (David Harewood)— his very own brother, Malefic J'Onzz (Phil LaMarr).  The upcoming episode, 'Stranger Beside Me' may probably explain the relationship between the two while also incorporating some elements of the Kara aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) relationship. The promo released after the season opener also revealed a scrimmage between Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Kara.

At the moment, it is is still unclear why Malefic hates his brother, while the latter doesn't even remember that he has a brother. Perhaps it is possible that J'Onn's father wiped out his memories of having a brother. Malefic is bent on revenge saying J'onn and his father were more evil than he imagined and they would get what's coming for them.

Meanwhile, there is the other unexplained plot point of why Alex and Kara fight. The official synopsis reads: Technology Becomes The New Threat—  Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), Alex (Chyler Leigh), and Brainiac (Jesse Rath) thwart an alien attack while William (Staz Nair) investigates Kara (Melissa Benoist). J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) and Kelly (Azie Tesfai) use Obsidian tech to solve a problem. David McWhirter has directed the episode written by Dana Horgan and Katie Rose Rogers.

Since the premise talks about the team fending off an alien attack, could they be fighting Malefic who's cloned himself as Alex? Or is this one of Lena's schemes after she vowed to continue exacting revenge on Kara?

Meanwhile, there are also a few unanswered questions from the season opener that we hope 'Stranger Beside Me' may answer. One of them is what Lena's plans are to fix humanity and how she intends to use Kara as a tool. BleedingCool has a collection of new preview images of episode 2 released by The CW and they show the team trying to help J'Onn remember, while Lena and Andrea Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) aka Acrata seem to be having some discussion.

Then there is that question as to what happened to Eve Teschmacher (Andrea Brooks) after she manipulated Lex and Lena at the orders of a mysterious group called Leviathan. In 'Event Horizon', she was seen in a waitress attire suggesting that she has evaded the Leviathan. Will we see a subplot that explains how she managed to escape?

What are your thoughts on the probable plot points of episode 2?

'Supergirl' airs Sundays, 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
