Super Bowl 2018 halftime show: Justin Timberlake's tribute to Prince and everything else that happened
Justin Timberlake appeared during the Super Bowl once again and this time the singer might have thought about his performance. But did he really succeed?
Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl performance was a much-awaited one as everyone wanted to see if the singer would try to make amends for the mistakes he did during his last performance. In 2004, Justin unwittingly landed himself into controversy after his performance with Janet Jackson ended up being the center of all the media attention.
During that year's performance, Justin accidentally tore off more of Jackson’s wardrobe than he meant due to which Janet had to come out with a statement of apology while also being banned from the event. On the other hand, Justin did not have to suffer so much. On Sunday (January 4), Justin decided to give it his all in a powerful, energetic performance as a tribute to Prince. However, while doing so, Justin managed to remind the crowd about his scandalous performance from 2004.
At first, Justin came in all geared up to sweep the audience off the floor with his performance and his selfie with a fan, which has now gone viral, was the indication that the Mirror singer was here to own the place and prove to everyone that this performance is going to be like no other. During the first half of his performance, Justin chose to sing his song Filthy, from his upcoming album while the crowd cheered along with the song while holding their cell phones up in the air with a lit screen.
But the performance could not be complete without Justin managing to shock audiences once again. And just as the crowd was thinking there would be nothing controversial this time, Justin decided to shake it up on the beats of his controversial song Rock Your Body. Fans were in a bit shock as to why the singer would choose that particular song.
While some thought that it was Justin's way of apology, others thought that the singer was mocking the incident in a subtle way. Many people had their own thoughts regarding that particular incident. "Including “Rock Your Body” in this mix of songs is maybe a tiiiiiiny bit tone-deaf," wrote one fan. While another wrote, "Rock Your Body first song on the stage? I feel like this is a little troll-y? Am I alone here?"
The other songs that Justin decided to sing during his performance included Sexy Back, Mirrors and a duet-from-beyond with Prince. The singer also decided to dedicate his performance to Prince, who was a resident of Minneapolis. Before starting his song, Justin announced, "Minneapolis, this one's for you." After this, Justin went on to take his position to play the piano while singing " "I Would Die 4 U."
Prior to this performance, Justin had set people talking when it was revealed that the singer was planning a musical tribute to Prince and that would include a hologram of the “purple one”. Many people showed their disapproval towards the idea as Prince was against such technology and often referred to them as “the most demonic thing imaginable”.
Despite this, the idea was still held to be taken forward until Sheila E, Prince’s former drummer, came forward and tweeted about how Prince would not have approved of this. "Prince told me don’t ever let anyone do a hologram of me. Not cool if this happens!" she tweeted in response to the news that Justin intended to do so while paying tribute to the late singer.
In response to this, Justin decided to change his idea and chose to project the footage from Purple Rain on to a billowing sheet during the song, which faintly echoed Prince’s own 2007 half-time show. Despite this, people had mixed reactions towards his performance. Some people believed that Justin's performance was the tribute that the singer needed.
"Fantastic Performance! One of the best Halftime shows in a long time!" one fan wrote. "Best halftime show ever! Loved the tribute to Prince!," wrote another. Other thought that it wasn't a tribute and was rather a disrespectful thought. "Omit honor and add disgraced Prince wouldn't have been pleased with all JT played himself," one user wrote. "Timberlake riding Prince's coattails. No shame I guess. sorry to have seen this," wrote another. Even though there myriad reactions, Justin sure did manage to keep the crowd entertained and we applaud him for that!
