Since the inception of ABC series 'Stumptown', Dex's (Cobie Smulders) character had been played out to be a scruffy ex-marine, who is drowned in the memories of her former lover, using her intellect only at the most desperate of times to earn a few bucks.

She seeks lowkey pleasure from fighting for the underdogs, but wouldn’t mind dealing with something or someone powerful as long it meets her needs. However, episode 7 ‘November Surprise’ adds more depth to her character, when we see her choose her morality over moolah, even when she had the opportunity to make a fortune.

In the latest episode, Dex is hired by a local politician Venessa, to pull a few threads from her opponent Dan Gibson’s past, to kick him out of the race. Although Dex is hesitant in the beginning, she gets lured into the investigation upon learning about the humongous fee she was being offered. Dex goes undercover and works at Sen. Gibson’s office with the fundraiser team, where she comes across a letter that reveals intimate details from over a decade ago when he was a professor and fathered the child of one of his students Emma Linstorm. Gibson is publicly gay, who claims his campaign for the upcoming elections is based on nothing but the truth, with respect to sexuality as well.

When Dex finally confronts Emma, on the pretext of her relationship with Gibson being revealed in public, the PI begins to empathize with Jacob (Emma and Dan’s son). Upon realizing the jeopardy her actions could cause in the young boy’s life, she takes a step back from the mission.

She goes to the Orange County Fair where both the contesting parties are present and brings them to talk to each other. When Gibson chooses to drop out of the race, Vanessa signs a contract stating his secret from the heterosexual past wouldn’t be revealed. Dex has always taken pride in fighting for the underdogs. She may be deep in gambling debts, still living at her parents’ house, but her morality and sense of virtue truly define her character.

However, Dex acknowledges her weakness which rests deep within. The awkwardness that existed between her, Grey, Liz and Hoffman at the Thanksgiving dinner makes it obvious that she has been bitten by the green-eyed monster. She continues to be envious of Liz, despite being aware of the relationship she shares with Grey.

Episode 8 of 'Stumptown' is scheduled to air on December 4, on ABC.
