Dr Stella Immanuel, the controversial primary care physician from Houston, grabbed headlines when she declared last month that hydroxychloroquine is the "cure" for Covid-19. At America’s Frontline Doctors press conference on July 27, she had said, “Nobody needs to die from this virus. It has a cure and it called hydroxychloroquine. You don’t need mask and you don’t need people to be locked down (sic).” She seems to be under the spotlight on Twitter since then. Last week, she had tweeted and claimed that “Jesus will turn things around.”

The doctor is back with another claim, or rather, a “movement” as she says. She tweeted about a petition on We the People, a section of the whitehouse.gov website for petitioning the administration's policy experts, about granting an executive order for hydroxychloroquine use for Covid-19 Prophylaxis. It should be noted that WHO has discontinued hydroxychloroquine trials after initial results showed that it produced little or no reduction in the mortality of hospitalized Covid-19 patients when compared to standard care.

She tweeted: “Sign this petition and share! We need a movement! https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/we-people-are-requesting-executive-order-granting-hydroxychloroquine-use-covid-19-prophylaxis.”

The petition states, “We the Undersigned hereby request a Presidential Executive Order granting permission for all United States physicians to prescribe Hydroxychloroquine for prophylaxis against COVID-19 for all Americans without fear of persecution or retaliation from all medical authorities and governmental agencies. Thousands of physicians recognize the abundance of research available that affirms both the safety and effectiveness of low dose prophylaxis using Hydroxychloroquine. Americans deserve a Right to Try as a basic human right. Currently due to political agendas, citizens are being deprived of their basic human rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We believe this executive order will hasten the end of the pandemic with all of its suffering and ensure equal rights to all Americans.” The petition has a goal of 100,000 signs by September 7, and till now it has got more than 5,900 signatures.

Soon after the tweet was shared, Internet users took to the social media platform to air their views on the topic. One user immediately rejected her request and said, "Sorry, no possible way. I was healthy until someone gave me Chloroquine as a prophylactic for Plasmodium vivax. Within a week I developed multiple rheumatological and oncological diseases that I will die from if a sepsis infection does not do me in first. It is not safe."

Another dismissed her tweet, saying, "A real American fights for the rights of every man, according to Rick Derringer. They do not fight for the rights to mislead people on fake cures."

An angry user said, "Let me get this straight. You want the public at large to sign a petition to allow an unproven drug with significant risk to be available. Preposterous!! Let's petition for Cocaine, crack and electric shock treatment as well."

But she did find support from many users as well. One user said, "It's insane in 2020 I can buy cigarettes but not something that could potentially prevent me from getting a deadly disease..signed and RT'd."

Another supporter wrote, "Done! Thank you and all the Frontline Docs for your bravery and for your commitment to doing what’s in the patient’s best interest."

Another said, "Done!!! Thank you for having the courage to speak the truth."

"I’m with you my sister!! God bless you for fighting the evil upon us," wrote a user.

One user even complimented Immanuel by touting her as the "light in the darkness."

According to John Hopkins tracker, the confirmed coronavirus cases in the US have crossed 5 million on Sunday, August 9, by far the highest of any country.
