'Stargirl' Episode 9: Will Barbara end up paying a heavy price for Courtney's recklessness?
You always wonder how the mothers of teenage superheroes have no clue what they're up to. In 'Stargirl', Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) has performed stunts with her Cosmic Staff in the backyard and her mother Barbara (Amy Smart) had no idea about it. That's nothing, Courtney has battled villains in practically every episode and one even landed her in the emergency room. Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) crafted a story for that, by actually crashing his car into a tree and pretending that they had been in a car accident. Barbara believed it, obviously, because which mother would want to believe that her daughter has taken on dangerous villains in the town?
However, in Episode 9 of the show, it seems as if Barbara has finally stumbled upon the truth. Pat had been keen on telling her from the start, but Courtney begged him not to. At the end of Episode 9, Barbara enters the basement and sees the staff and she doesn't look entirely pleased. In all probability, she might stop Courtney from trying out more superheroics and be furious with Pat for encouraging this.
To be fair, Courtney has been entirely heedless throughout the season and not even been subtle about concealing her secret identity. Pat and Courtney need to let Barbara in on their plans as soon as possible because trouble is lurking in every corner of Blue Valley. For starters, Barbara works with Jordan Mahkent AKA Icicle (Neil Jackson) who is the founder of the Injustice Society Of America and doesn't think twice about killing anyone.
Icicle doesn't know that Courtney is Stargirl, but he just might very soon, as Brainwave Jr (Henry Austin Walker) knows and if he does, his father Brainwave (Christopher Baker), who has just recovered from a coma, will know too. There are two possibilities. Either, Icicle will manipulate Barbara against her own family and wreck them from within. On a side note, Icicle is just too charming to ignore and really knows to win everyone over with his eloquence and butter-wouldn't-melt tones.
Anyway, Dragon King's daughter Cindy Burman knows that Courtney is Stargirl too, and well, supervillain news travels fast. The second option is a darker one, the ISA might just kill Barbara to wound Stargirl and Pat, emotionally. It's a grim speculation, but Icicle has proved he doesn't mind murdering anyone. Will this painful lesson shake Courtney up and force her to be more cautious? Ouch.
In the latest episode, Barbara invited Jordan Mahkent AKA Icicle and his family over for dinner. Things seemed merry, till Courtney discovered that Jordan is in fact Icicle and that it won't be long till he will find out her truth. Well, it remains to be seen what happens, but the future looks bleak for Courtney and her family. The ISA (Injustice Society Of America) is onto Stargirl and they won't stop at anything. Pat needs to start preparing the teenagers properly for battle because let's face it, they're a mess.
