'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' final trailer shows Rey and Kylo Ren join forces to face a bigger evil

Judging from the trailer, it looks like J.J. Abrams has a truly epic finale in mind for the Skywalker saga that has now stretched over three trilogies and it all boils down to Rey and Ben, the light side and the dark, coming together to finally unite the Force.

The final trailer for 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' is here and it's full of stunning visuals including a floating glacier, a forest world that's reminiscent of Endor, and a confrontation between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Ben Solo / Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) on a watery planet. Judging from the trailer, it looks like J.J. Abrams has a truly epic finale in mind for the Skywalker saga that has now stretched over three trilogies and it all boils down to Rey and Ben, the light side and the dark, coming together to finally unite the Force

In 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi', Kylo Ren rebelled against his master Snoke (Andy Serkis) and took his place as Supreme Leader of the First Order. Considering Rey and Ben are on opposite sides of the war that's currently ripping the galaxy apart, it's inevitable that they will come to blows at some point in the upcoming movie.

The trailer does show the two Force-wielders battling it out, but what's really interesting is that it also shows them uniting to destroy a black stone artifact of some sort. The quick shot hints that despite their differences, Rey and Ben are going to have to join forces to face an even bigger evil than the First Order.

At this point, we have a pretty good idea of what that greater threat might be: the return of the Sith Lord Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).  The Emperor's return has been heavily teased since the very first teaser for the movie came out but we still haven't seen his face in any of the trailers, including the latest one.

We do see a floating figure dressed in black robes hovering menacingly over Rey, which might be the Emperor but since we don't see his face there's no way to know for sure. Considering the sheer power at the Emperor's disposal, he is certainly a large enough threat to cause the Resistance and the First Order to put aside their differences and unite to take him down.

However, the final trailer does hint that this union of the light and dark may actually be part of Palpatine's plans. "Long have I waited," the Emperor says in a voice-over. "And now, you're coming together... is your undoing."

Right at this moment, we don't know what the Emperor's plans are or even how he survived his apparent death in 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi'. But one way or another, this will be the final conclusion for the Skywalker Saga and we hope the movie turns out to be a worthy end to this epic story. As the trailer says, "The saga will end, the story lives forever."

'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' will hit theaters on December 20.
