'Sex Education' Season 2 Episode 5 sees Ola, Mrs Groff express and embrace their sexuality but Adam struggles
Spoilers ahead for Season 2 Episode 4
One of the best things about 'Sex Education' is how it touches on how people struggle with their sexuality -- not just as teenagers but as adults too. In Episode 4, Dr. Jean Millburn (Gillian Anderson) told the girl who was asexual that she was not broken, freeing her of the feelings of inadequacy.
In Episode 5, Ola (Patricia Allison) starts having sex dreams about Lily (Tanya Reynolds) replacing Otis (Asa Butterfield). She does a sexual orientation quiz after Adam Groff, her coworker at the shop (Connor Swindells), refuses to have a conversation about liking someone of the same sex.
Unlike Ola, who isn't bothered about finding out that she is "pansexual" or attracted to people for who they are rather than their genitalia, Adam is in denial about being gay. It is why he tormented Eric Effoing (Ncuti Gatwa) in season 1 before giving him a blow job and why he never acknowledges Eric except on their "night dates".
After seeing Ola take the quiz, Adam tries to masturbate to the poster of a girl but his eyes keep getting drawn to the hunky man posing beside her. Part of the reason why he is so closeted is because of his overbearing father, Headmaster Groff (Alistair Petrie), who has always made him feel inferior.
Headmaster Groff is not any better to his wife either, who he hasn't touched properly in six years. Six years! But thanks to Dr. Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) guiding her in one of her "vagina sessions" for women and the nifty little dildo Jean gifts, Mrs. Groff finally rediscovers her vagina.
She buys mangoes in celebration because she is feeling sensual again and is brought back to earth by Headmaster Groff scolding her about mangoes costing too much. His repressive attitude finally gets to her and she asks for a divorce.
While Mrs. Groff, Ola, and Adam are struggling to find ways to express their sexuality, Remi Millburn (James Purefoy) has the opposite problem. He is a sex addict who refuses to get help.
Both Otis and Jean realize that he has been kicked out by Deliah, his wife, for cheating, just like he had cheated on Jean. Otis is determined not to be like him and texts Maeve saying he can't see her before confessing he loves Ola.
But Ola, who realizes she is attracted to Lily, not Otis, calls him out. She says he doesn't love her and neither does she. She runs to Lily's house to kiss her. They kiss and it's perfect but Lily shuts down right after, closing the door on Ola's face. The course of love never did run smooth.
'Sex Education' Season 2 aired on Netflix on January 17.
