'Schitt's Creek': The Roses may have lost their fortune but together they have all found a sense of purpose

The Roses have all grown as characters through the course of the series by channeling their best selves into future goals

Spoiler alert for 'Schitt's Creek' Season 6 Episode 10 'Sunrise, Sunset'

When 'Schitt's Creek' began, the Roses were all self-centered millionaires without a care in the world beyond how good their public image was.

They've come a long way since then — each in their own way — and Season 6 seems to be rewarding that journey by giving each of the Roses and Stevie Budd (Emily Hampshire) a sense of purpose.

The rug was violently pulled out from underneath the Roses' feet, but the experience has helped them find a more solid footing than ever before, as they march on to their new future.

There was a certain aimlessness in the Roses' life, before Schitt's Creek. They had been spoiled by luxury and their fast-paced life left no time for them to check where they were going. Landing in Schitt's Creek, however, united the family in a single goal — to get out of there by any means necessary.

Over time, the goalposts shifted. From leaving the town to just being able to have their own independence. The Roses slowly and erratically clawed their way back to dignity, and to their credit, they did it their way.

David Rose (Eugene Levy), with Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid), opened his own store. Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) found a job she's perfect for and she's been excelling at it.

Johnny Rose is diving back into business with his new plans for a motel empire, and this episode, we see that while Moira Rose (Catherine O'Hara) still wants a career as an actor, she's holding to certain standards for herself, instead of being a slave to whatever celebrity life would demand from her.

Stevie, who herself has been trying to find her place in life this season, has managed to find her own sense of purpose. For someone whose character has been highly motivated by wanting to remain unseen in a quiet motel, free of responsibilities and rarely straying outside her comfort zone, she has taken a huge risk this episode.

The plan for a rapid, large-scale business advancement is not easily made, but it's one of the first times we've ever seen Stevie completely confident and happy with a decision she has made.

Season 6 has taken all the series' character growth and put it into a future that we're sadly not going to get to see. It's the final season's greatest gift to its audience — a payoff for everything that its protagonists have gone through.

The show has made its audience care about its characters and it's rewarding to know that they are all building towards a happy ending that's well earned.

The next episode of 'Schitt's Creek' airs on March 17 on Pop TV.
