The article contains spoilers for 'Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones' Episode 3: 'Case #20-054'

If it was murder mystery and the complex pattern that was introduced in Episodes 1 and 2, 'Case #20-054' gives a glimpse of Harper's (Juliette Lewis) past as well. It may not be much, but there's a troubled past that has fractured her relationship with her mother.

The episode sees Harper and Elsie (Jordan Alexander) pay a visit to a facial composite artist who managed to sketch out a rough of what Elise's mom would probably look like. For Harper, this was a move to find out more about Peter (Ryan Kwanten)  and his wife who were listed as Elsie's parents in records. However, Elsie, who has a vague recollection of her mother's facial features, breaks down midway during the sketching session. The artist helps her coax her memory back leading to an emotional moment as she thinks of her mother.

Later on, Harper tries calling her mother who insists she would hang up and must never call her. All the while, all that Harper really wants to say is she's missing her mother. This comes in as a new layer for the character who was introduced as an eccentric, isolated telemarketer who volunteers as an “armchair detective” for a Jane Doe website dedicated to closing out cold cases that involving missing and unidentified people. Now she chooses to immerse herself obsessively in finding the lost – especially those who no one else is looking for.

The reason why she's separated from her family is yet to be explained with the focus currently on Peter and the dead sisters (played by Siobhan Williams and Emily Alyn Lind).
