Spoiler alert for 'Sacred Lies: Chapter One: The Singing Bones'

While Juliette Lewis as 'Harper' took most of the screentime in the pilot episode as an amateur sleuth, her co-star Jordan Alexander, who plays Elsie got enough backstory as well.  While Harper is chasing a cold case, Elsie is having a hard time trying to fit in after being bounced off multiple foster homes. The episode starts with a flashback where a young Elsie is abandoned at a diner by her father, Peter (Ryan Kwanten).

The pilot sheds light on the psyche of a child who's never experienced what it is to be with family.  There are multiple instances and one of them is Elsie threatening her mute roommate, Nina. That she's overly possessive with her belongings and flies into uncontrollable rages are classic examples of living in foster care that may not have necessarily provided the right care.

It is probably even more hurtful when there's that sick realization that she's not really an orphan. Peter, incarcerated for a crime beyond child abandonment, is serving time in prison and is probably guilty for more than just letting Elsie off when she was a kid. 'The Singing Bones' primarily attempts to explain the mindset of those traumatized since childhood and also shows that there are more people like her in the world and each of them has their own dreams about their future.

While we can expect more of Elsie's background over the course of the season, the first episode has managed to give out enough to know that Elsie is a character in need of love and care. Little does she know that a chilling murder mystery is hovering around and would change her life forever.

'Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones' is available for streaming on Facebook Watch.
