Hollywood actor Robert DeNiro reiterated calls for President Donald Trump to be impeached during an interview with CNN on Sunday and referred to the Republican as a "gangster" who may be mentally ill. The actor, on Reliable Sources with Brian Stelter, also praised House Democrats for their decision to open an impeachment inquiry against Trump.

"It has to happen. There's no way around it," the 76-year-old actor said while referring to the Trump impeachment inquiry. DeNiro added that he does not think Trump is "capable" of resigning and that he fears the president would refuse to leave the White House even when Congress does decide to impeach him.

"He'll say it's rigged, this or that," DeNiro said. "This guy has done everything possible, much worse than I ever thought ever. The day after he was elected I said, give him a chance. You'll never know. He is worse than I ever could have imagined."

When the actor was pressed by Stelter to elaborate why he was against Trump, DeNiro replied with: "I don't know. I think he's crazy in a way. Part of him is just crazy. Possibly medically, too, I'm starting to think. When I saw him out in front of the helicopter waiting to go somewhere and talking endlessly and sweating, I said: 'This guy is not even aware of what he's [doing]. He should at least ask somebody for a handkerchief or something and dry himself off.'"

"I mean, where are we? This is a crazy world. What is going on? This guy is crazy. We've got to get him out," the actor added.

DeNiro, during the segment, was also asked by Stelter whether he ever looked at Trump and thought he was "playing an actor or something?" The actor replied with saying that "in some ways" he thinks Trump is performing. However, he also accused Fox News commentators of doing the same.

"I can't believe that they would actually buy into this craziness," DeNiro said of "these pundits on Fox. This guy should not be president, period."

When Stelter noted that DeNiro had received criticism from Fox commentators for his past criticism of the president, particularly after he said "F*** Trump" during the 2018 Tony Award speech, the actor interrupted the host by saying: "F*** 'em. F*** 'em." He then went on to apologize to producer's off-camera.

"We are in a moment in our lives, in this country, where this guy is like a gangster," DeNiro said. "He's come along and he's said things, done things, and we say over and over again: 'This is terrible. We're in a terrible situation. We're in a terrible situation.' And this guy just keeps going on and on without being stopped."

DeNiro appeared on the CNN segment as part of his press tour for his new Netflix film 'The Irishman'. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, stars him, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci.
