A retired NYPD sergeant was mercilessly beaten up, punched and kicked by a homeless man while he lay helplessly on the ground. The beatdown, which had happened in Manhattan last week, was caught on video. In the footage, the ex-cop could be seen speaking with his attacker for around a minute while the two were standing outside a Garment District deli on West 39th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenue, reports New York Post.

The incident had taken place last Tuesday morning on August 11. The 56-year-old veteran had asked Masterjardin Roman, 20, to stop panhandling in front of the store, NY Daily News reports. After a minute of the two arguing, Roman was seen throwing a bottle at the former detective who is then seen chasing after Roman. While the two wrestled on the sidewalk, Roman was able to tackle the former sergeant to the ground which led to the ex-cop losing consciousness briefly. Roman had punched the former cop around 16 times before getting up and walking away. He then ran back to the man and kicked him in the face, the Daily News report further adds. As per Washington Examiner, Roman can also be seen taking the victim’s cellphone and headphones.

A friend of Roman's filmed the entire attack with the walking off once the incident was over, the clip shows. The police revealed that the retired detective was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital and had bruises, cuts, as well as a possible head fracture. Two days after the horrific incident, the police arrested Roman on Ninth Ave. near W. 34th Street which is around five blocks from where the incident had occurred. When the police had taken him into custody, they found a machete in his backpack.

Roman was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. It is not known whether Roman had the machete when he had attacked the former NYPD sergeant. Police sources say that Roman was given a desk appearance ticket.

Many social media users took to Twitter to condemn the attack. One user wrote, "So glad you caught this low life ‘ made the streets safer in the city. Prayers for the officer & hope he makes a full recovery from this useless attack. People have just lost their minds lately!!"

Another added, "That is the worst part of these attacks. They don't just attack and stop when your down and out. They attack you harder when you can not defend yourself. That is very serious. If someone attacks someone who is unable to defend themselves that should be a min of 5 years added."

"This is clearly an assault, or even a hate crime. Aggressive panhandling? We need to stop the violence amongst all races. But the Liberal media wants to create hate between the races and endorse the continuing violence. Sad times in America for sure. Everyone needs love instead!" another outraged user commented.

Yet another user, who echoed the same sentiments, shared, "@Manhattanda should resign - he is supposed to represent the people of the state and justice. How in any f’ing way is this justice? He wouldn’t know justice if it sat in his face."
