Trump should face 'death penalty' for treason following Ukraine scandal, says Republican challenger Bill Weld
Republican presidential candidate for the 2020 elections Bill Weld has slammed Donald Trump's actions with regard to pressurizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
He felt that the move calls for Trump's impeachment. Weld said during an interview on MSNBC‘S 'Morning Joe' that Trump's actions were "treason, plain and simple."
The punishment for treason is the death penalty, he said, adding that Trump should work out a plea deal. "Talk about pressuring a foreign country to interfere with and control a U.S. election, it couldn't be clearer."
"And that's not just undermining Democratic institutions, that is treason. It's treason pure and simple and the penalty for treason under the US code is death," he said.
Pointing it out, he said, "That's the only penalty, the penalty on the Constitution is the removal of office and that might look like a pretty good alternative to the President if he could work out a plea deal," he said.
While the phone call was laughed off at first by Trump and his team, he later admitted to making it. The transcript was read out in a hearing on Thursday, September 27, by Rep Adam Schiff and has since been the center of one controversy after another.
Mark Sanford, who is also a Republican hopeful in 2020, also agreed to Weld during the interview. Trump, meanwhile, has been slamming the Democrats on Twitter repeatedly.
He had recently said, "The Fake News doesn’t dare mention the corrupt Democrats!". Speaking about Schiff's reading and calling it "totally fraudulent" Trump said, "The only people that don't like my conversation with the new Ukrainian President are those that heard Rep. Adam Schiff" he said in a tweet.
Weld too, had a lot to say about Trump on Twitter. "What does an unhinged racist @realDonaldTrump do when the going gets tough?," the candidate tweeted, slamming Trump's remarks on the Democrats.
"He calls six Members of Congress—two Jewish committee chairs and four women of color… Savages. Donald Trump is unfit to serve. Period."
