Trump in 'excellent health,' White House doctor says after exam
President Donald Trump had slammed reports questioning his mental stability in a series of tweets
On Friday, the doctor who examined President Trump's health and fitness announced that he is in "excellent health".
Dr. Ronny Jackson further added, “The President's exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center went exceptionally well. The president is in excellent health and I look forward to briefing some of the details on Tuesday.”
President Trump underwent a three-hour assessment with military doctors at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. It's been a week since the President's mental health has been under extreme scrutiny.
Trump was 70 years old when he took office, making him the oldest President in the history of the USA.
Doubts about the President's physical and mental health have been raised constantly by some Democrats in Congress who claim that he is not fit to be in office. On the contrary, two months before the 2016 elections, Trump released a five-paragraph letter from his longtime physician, Dr. Harold Bornstein, who deduced that Trump was "in excellent physical health."
A year earlier, Bornstein said in a letter, "If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency."
There have been several rumors floating about the President's diet, some claiming that Trump has an unhealthy affinity towards cheeseburgers. Some media houses also claim that he drinks a dozen diet cokes in a day.
Trump is an avid golfer, and indulges in exhaustive forms of exercise and sleeps for only a few hours at night, The New York Times reports.
In a 2015 interview, he told the news outlet, ‘‘All my friends who work out all the time, they’re going for knee replacements, hip replacements — they’re a disaster.’’
Many democratic representatives and the release of Michael Wolff's 'bogus' book have raised concerns about the President's mental accuracy and beyond his physical fitness, they claim that Trump is mentally unfit to be President.
The White House has maintained that the president's mental and physical health couldn't be better. House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders has slammed the rumors about his ill mental health as "disgraceful and laughable". Recently, the President had tweeted about his mental acuity being questioned; he asserted that he is known to be a “very stable genius”.
....Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) 6 January 2018
....to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius....and a very stable genius at that!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) 6 January 2018
Some psychiatrists have reached conclusions about the president's behavior without assessing him personally. They think it is their duty to warn against Trump's "unstable" behavior. Some House Democrats are seeking reports from psychiatrists trying to learn about his mental state.
The President is not liable to release any information regarding his personal health; However, in the interest of the curiosity of many of his critics and well as his supporters, he has requested Dr. Jackson to take questions from the media on Tuesday and clear any doubts the reporters might have.
President Trump's physician Dr. Ronny Jackson is a Navy rear admiral and has served in the Iraq war as a doctor for a shock trauma platoon during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has also served as a physician for former president Barack Obama.
Although fitness tests are not mandatory for the presidential office, many government officials take regular check-ups from doctors to reassure themselves of their fitness to serve.
In the past, none of the presidents have been subjected to fitness exams to prove their mental acuity or their physical state.
