Serena Williams chooses motherhood over career, pulls out of Australian Open
After giving birth to a baby daughter, Serena Williams believes that she is not yet ready to get back on the court.
Serena Williams shocked the world when people realized that she was pregnant during the Australian Open last year and as much as people expected to see the tennis champion slay the tournament even this season, unfortunately for everyone, Serena will not be part of the prestigious sports event.
Just a couple of days before the Australian Open was about to start, Serena made the announcement of her withdrawal through her Snapchat handle. The tennis star opened up about how she personally did not feel that she was ready to take on the match this year and wanted to concentrate on her family life.
"After performing in my first match after giving birth I realized that although I am super close I’m not where I personally want to be," she said. Serena confessed that she believes in playing a match only when she physically and mentally thinks that she is ready for it. However, this time, things have been different.
"My coach and team always said ‘Only go to tournaments when you are prepared to go all the way.’ With that being said I am disappointed to say I’ve decided not to compete in The Australian Open this year," she said. Serena recently made a comeback in the game with an exhibition match.
On December 30, Serena faced off against French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and was defeated in an exhibition match at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. During the first match, Serena seemed to struggle with her serve as at the end as Jelena was trumping her by 6-2.
Even though Serena was able to rebound in the second by winning 3-2, she ended up losing in a super tiebreaker by 10-5. Many could see that Serena's performance was not the same as it previously has been. Some people believed that her groundstrokes weren't as crisp while others suggested that Serena's movement was a bit sluggish.
Serena concluded her post by stating that as much as it makes her sad to withdraw from the game, she hopes to get back to it once she feels she is completely ready for it. "However, the memory of last year’s Open is one that I will carry with me and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again. I appreciate the support and understanding of my fans and everyone at the Australian Open," she concluded her statement.
Back in April, Serena hinted people about her pregnancy by sharing a picture of her in a yellow swimming suit and captioned the picture as "20 weeks". This immediately sparked speculation among people as people wondered if Serena was trying to hint that she was pregnant with her first child.
Later that day, Serena's spokesperson confirmed that the couple was expecting. However, the announcement of her pregnancy has been unintentional as Serena was planning to keep it a secret for a few more days. In an interview with People, Serena admitted that the snap had been an accident.
"I didn’t tell a lot of people to be quite honest and I’d been saving it. On social media, you press the wrong button and… Thirty minutes later I missed four calls and I’m like, ‘That’s weird.’ But it was a good moment. I was only going to wait five or six more days to share," she told the magazine.
But what people could not believe was that Serena managed to play the Australian Open and win it when she was eight weeks pregnant. On November 16, 2017, Serena and Alexis got married in an extravagant wedding that took place in New Orleans.
The wedding had been star-studded as it saw celebrities like Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Kim Kardashian West. The newlyweds also shared a heartwarming picture with their daughter Olympia and touched the hearts of their guests with their handwritten vows for each other. While Serena is focusing on her family and herself at the moment, we cannot wait to see her back in the game.
