Meghan Markle revealed to be author of shockingly candid blog The Working Actress
Meghan Markle was revealed to be the struggling author of popular blog The Working Actress, despite her attempts to remain anonymous and bury the blog.
Meghan Markle has been outed as the author of a secret blog called The Working Actress that ran from 2010 to 2012 and chronicled her frustrations as an unknown actress trying to make it in Hollywood, according to a source at MailOnline.
A Twitter account that posted about new updates to her blog was started on January 12, 2010, and the first post read, "Welcome to the hustle." Though the blog has been deleted, allegedly to cover Markle's traces, there are multiple places on the Web where her content has been quoted, giving interested viewers a chance to look into the life of the duchess-to-be as a young, struggling actress.
First day on twitter. Looking forward to sharing my musings on being a working actress. Welcome to the hustle.— The Working Actress (@workingactress) January 12, 2010
In one tweet, she wrote, "This industry can be brutal. A pearl of wisdom: 'Don't give it five minutes if you're not gonna give it five years.'" An excerpt from the blog revealed her candid thoughts about the difficulties and emotional ups and downs that came with working in Hollywood:
She wrote, "I was swimming in negative thought during the day, and needed to tell myself (trick myself, even) that I would work. That I would keep working. That I didn’t need to worry about the lulls in between jobs, when the next check would come, or the sadness that hits after your wrap a show, because, well…I had to trust that I was a booker. If that’s what I wanted to be, then I had to trick myself into being just that. (Even when I wasn’t booking a f**ing thing)."
The anonymous writer, purported to be Markle, detailed her financial and emotional struggles as she fought to stay strong in a hostile industry. "If there’s any industry where resilience pays off, this is the one. Afterall, last week I was forgotten, this morning I bawled my eyes out for an audition, and over the past 5 years, I have heard “no” more than you can ever imagine," she wrote.
Many times, her hard work didn't pay off, and the scenes she shot for hours to perfect ended up being cut. She wrote, "Because there’s nothing worse than inviting people over to watch you on a show, only to realize that all of your scenes have been cut out. The awkward silence of friends sitting there so sympathetically and the one brave one who asks, "Was that it?""
In an interview with Space Gypsies, the anonymous actress said that finding out that she had been cut while with friends and family was "mortifying. It’s those kind of discoveries that are humbling as they are mind numbing, and have sent me into a tailspin of sobbing in bed with a bottle of wine and a box of cookies."
It's no wonder then that in such a cutthroat industry, she was forced to find an outlet to vent all her frustrations and struggles. She said, "Writing the blog was something I wanted to do for myself. It was a new year’s resolution — a cathartic way to document my experiences. Just something for me."
The blogger, alleged to be Markle, described some uncomfortable and undignified situations she had to face, writing, "As a series regular you have a lot more leeway to say what’s bothering you... to share how incredibly awkward it is when the guy playing your boyfriend is grinding a little too hard into you during your love scene. (Oh yes, and with a big old chubby…that’s not awkward at allllllll 😉."
She continued, "But as a guest star, I feel you kind of have to suck it up. They toss in a kissing scene for no apparent reason, they change your outfit from jeans to a dress the size of a loin cloth….sometimes it’s just part of the job."
This wasn't even the worst she had to go through. She wrote, "I’ve had to freeze my acting union membership, borrow money, work jobs that I hated, endure being treated like s***, kiss actors with smelly breath and cry for hours on end because I just didn’t think I could take it anymore."
In an interview with Darling Magazine, Markle revealed that she had been too broke to afford a car. "It wasn’t that long ago that I was crawling into my car through the trunk after an audition for “Girl #2.” I had a beat up Ford Explorer Sport that rattled like a steamboat engine in the morning, and had decided it didn’t want to open from the front doors anymore. It was burning out. It had started to give up."
She talked about "trying to find my value in an industry that judges you on everything that you’re not versus everything that you are. Not thin enough, not pretty enough, not ethnic enough, while also being too thin, too ethnic, too pretty the very next day."
Markle claimed that the moment that turned her life around was when casting director April Webster gave her a pep talk. "She saw all that self-doubt beaming through the self-tanner and excessive blush. “You need to know that you’re enough,” she said. “Less makeup, more Meghan.” She went on to say that I was like a “shrinking violet,” wilted joy and energy and exuberance behind this shroud of insecurity."
An insider told MailOnline that "The “Working Actress” persona was like a therapy for her. It allowed her to lay bare her struggles and also call out to some industry people while remaining anonymous. But once her career took off and her lifestyle blog (The Tig) started doing well, she stopped writing this one. That was the platform she truly wanted." If indeed the claims are true, the royal family is going to have a fascinating new member.
