Everything you need to know about the upcoming Stargate series

Looks like the makers were inspired by Indiana Jones

MGM has released a new trailer for the much-awaited web series Stargate: Origins - based on the 1994 classic sci-fi adventure film Stargate.

The studio has also confirmed that the series will premiere online in February 2018.

Origins will be a 10-episode series, with each episode lasting only 10 minutes. It will be set in 1928, and will see Australian actress Ellie Gall play the young Catherine Langford (the role played by Viveca Lindfors in the original film).

The series is set shortly after the discovery of the Stargate. It seems Catherine’s father didn’t only discover the Stargate, he also managed to open the wormhole. The trailer appears to be set in both Egypt and the desert planet Abydos, which makes sense from a filming perspective. It’s also a pleasant nod to the Stargate movie.

While the franchise is known for its interstellar adventures, this prequel looks as though it’s remaining firmly grounded, and taking a bit of inspiration from the likes of Indiana Jones.

So even though the series is a science-fiction period piece, the show’s storyline will also feature battles against Nazis.

Over in Germany, Nazism was growing in power and influence. It’s a matter of science fiction legend that Hitler was always fascinated with the kind of ancient mysticism that Stargate roots in. No doubt the Nazis would be fascinated by the potential of the Stargate, and would seek it out with purpose.

In September this year, MGM launched the new Stargate Command site. This is the new digital platform for all things Stargate, and it’s the future home of the new Stargate Origins series — that’s where all the new episodes will stream once it’s released.

Each of the ten episodes in the series will run roughly ten minutes in length, and as such, the entire run of the series will add up to the length of a feature movie, give or take.

This is obviously a different approach when compared to other popular TV franchises that typically run extended episodes for longer stretches, but the level of restraint shown here in the process of delivering a proper story is arguably something to be commended. They’re clearly taking the slow build-up route like Marvel!

Created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, Stargate (1994) is the first release in the Stargate franchise. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film stars Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors.

The plot centers on the premise of a Stargate, an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole enabling travel to a similar device elsewhere in the universe. The film's central plot explores the theory of extraterrestrial beings having an influence upon human civilization.
