Titanic star Bill Paxton’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In their court papers, the family claimed that the actor's death could have been prevented. The 61-year-old actor died on February 25, 2017, from a stroke. He underwent a heart surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center just 11 days before his death.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Paxton’s family alleged that the surgeon who operated on the actor used "a high risk and unconventional surgical approach with which he lacked experience."
The family also claimed that the actor had post-surgery complications as a result of the operation. The Aliens actor's family said the surgeon was responsible for "misrepresenting and/or concealing information relating to the risks of surgery."
The surgeon was identified as Dr. Ali Khoynezhad. The family also alleged that the hospital hid information from them.
The True Lies actor suffered a heart condition known as an aortic aneurysm, which results in the enlargement of the aorta and shows no symptoms until it's ruptured. According to Indie Wire, the actor's surgery was performed in an effort to fix the condition.
The family’s attorney, Bruce Broillet, told ET, "Bill Paxton and his family trusted the physicians and staff at this medical facility but instead Cedars-Sinai betrayed their trust. The surgeon’s actions resulted in this tragic and preventable death."
The family also alleged that Dr. Khoynezhad wasn't present in the hospital when Paxton suffered from post-surgery complications and left his position at the hospital soon after. He is yet to respond to Paxton family's lawsuit.
In response, Cedars-Sinai told CNN, "Nothing is more important to Cedars-Sinai than the health and safety of our patients. These remain our top priorities. One of the reasons for our high quality is that we thoroughly review concerns about any patient’s medical care. This process ensures that we can continue to provide the highest quality care."
The Los Angeles hospital has given medical care to several celebrities in the past, including Lamar Odom, Zac Efron, Britney Spears, among others. It has come to be known as Hollywood's glamorous hospital which houses luxury maternity wards where the Kardashians have delivered their babies.
