Sarah Jessica Parker opens up about the rocky relationship she had with Robert Downey Jr.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr dated from 1984 to 1991, but sadly for the couple, their relationship started to fade away.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were together from 1984 – 1991 but sadly, Robert's drugs and alcohol addiction turned out to be the reason for their fallout. However, one thing that Sarah learned in these seven years was to take care of herself with no support. In an interview with People, the Sex And The City actress opened up about how their steady relationship soon started falling apart.

Throughout their relationship, Sarah revealed how she often worried about the health of Robert and tried her best to be positive through the entire ordeal. "There was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was OK," she told the magazine. "At a certain point, I had the courage to say, 'I'm going to walk away and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die'."

Even though Robert has often spoken about his drugs and alcohol addiction in his interviews, at that point, it was something that Sarah could not wrap her mind around. She could not see the severity of the issue and believed that it would all be fine after a while.

"I didn’t do anything," Sarah said. "I didn’t know for a long time. I was like, 'Why is his heart beating so fast? Don’t do so many push-ups before bed!'"

Even though Sarah and Robert soon realized that things were not working out, the actress does not regret the years she spent with him. "I don’t resent the time spent," she said. Sarah feels that she learned a lot from the relationship.

She believed the relationship was so special to her because it taught her how to love and somewhere, even how to be a good parent. "It taught me how I love," she said about their relationship. "And what’s the difference between loving and taking care of people and what’s necessary, and what grown-ups should and shouldn’t do for one another."

"Maybe it taught me a little bit about being a parent too, because the things that I ended up caring about, and the way I cared for Downey, were things that might be more suitable for a parent at a certain point," she continued. Shortly after moving on from Robert, she went on to marry Matthew Broderick and the couple is now parents to twin girls Tabitha and Loretta and son James Wilkie.

Robert even met the kids in 2015 and spoke about meeting them in an interview with Howard Stern. "Seeing her I was like, 'She’s so great and so cool and so funny and so in command,'" he told Howard Stern. "I got to meet her kids and I saw the way she and [husband] Matthew [Broderick] live and I respect both of them so much."
