NSFW: Surgeons pull out live grenade lodged inside soldier's jaws
Investigations revealed that the mishandling of a heavy fire weapon equipped with a grenade launcher resulted in the bomb, a "cellphone-sized" M-40 grenade, lodging in the soldier's right cheek.
In a scarily real yet heroic moment, military doctors in Colombia endangered their lives to remove a live grenade that had pierced a soldier's cheek and lodged itself between his jaws.
Military medics in Bogota risked their lives to perform the perilous surgery in 2016. The bomb had wedged itself in the soldier's jaws which could have exploded at any point, killing and injuring everyone in the proximity.
The soldier, Private Luis Eduardo Perez Arango, worked for the eighth division of the Arauca Army and was taken out of danger.
Investigations revealed that the mishandling of a heavy fire weapon equipped with a grenade launcher resulted in the bomb, a "cellphone-sized" M-40 grenade, lodging in his right cheek.
The emergency surgery was performed in a car park outside the Central Military Hospital in Bogota, and not inside the premises as surgeons feared that the grenade could have detonated anytime during surgery endangering other patients, CEN reported.
An eight-hour ambulance ride to the hospital with crushed cheek bones and missing teeth, and going through the surgery, the fear of detonation was real and alive all the while before the grenade was removed.
Chief of surgery, William Sanchez, told El Tiempo: “It was a decisive moment, logically one of stress and uncertainty, but there was no other option than to push on to save the life of the patient, even praying and asking God not to let a bigger tragedy happen.”
The surgeon went on to describe how the team had carried out the operation with utmost care, to not just safeguard the life of the soldier but their own and everyone around them as the bomb could have exploded anytime without warning.
“We now have an established protocol. We logically did it outside the hospital, because if it were to activate it, it needed to be somewhere it would have the least impact,” he added further.
This procedure is touted as one of the hair-raising, yet stirring moments in medical history.
As for private Luna, a series of reconstructive surgeries are lined up for him to repair the areas of his face damaged by the bomb.
