Oscars 2018: Rapper Common calls out President Trump and blasts NRA for gun violence during his performance
Along with singer Andra Day, Common took a political stand with the song 'Stand Up For Something'.
Rapper Common took his Oscar show performance as an opportunity to call out President Trump and the National Rifle Association. The rapper took the stage with singer Andra Day to perform the song 'Stand Up For Something', effectively calling out the present government's flaws.
The rapper started off his performance by first addressing the NRA. "Tell the NRA they in God's way," Common says at the beginning of the song. Responding to the direct attack, the NRA tweeted a video showing their followers what the NRA 'really stood for'.
Fans were quick to back up the rapper's accusations, replying to the NRA's Tweet the way the internet naturally would.
Funny, I have only heard vets say that they fought to give people the right to decide for themselves if they wish to sit or stand. How about asking the Vets what they want from the NRA?— Donna Garness (@Donna_Garness) March 5, 2018
Common didn't just stop there. The rapper, who is a proud supporter of the Black Lives Matter, also mentioned taking a knee to take a stand.
"A knee we take for our soul's sake," the rapper says as he and Andra took a knee on stage, referencing to the movement former San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started. Many fellow athletes followed Kaepernick's footsteps and decided to kneel during the National Anthem as a way of protesting the racial profiling that was rampant in America.
Then, Common went in for the kill. "These days we dance between love and hate. ... A President that trolls with hate." Common continued "He don't control our fate because God is great."
Finally, with a reference to Michelle Obama's 2016 election rallying call, 'When they go low, we go high,' Common ended his rap with "When they go low we stay in our heights. I stand for peace, love and women's rights."
Common and Andra were surrounded by activists that represented a diverse number of issues. The performance was met with praise and appreciation from the audience as well as fans on the internet.
