Harry and Meghan Markle might have to end up paying for their own security as well as that of their toddler son while they live abroad after Megxit officially goes into effect on March 31,the day after which the Canadians say they will stop paying for their protection.

According to Express, after the Canadian government made it clear last week that their country's taxpayers will not be paying for the couple's security, the Queen reached out to the Sussexes and had a private chat with them. Although there is no way to tell what was discussed in the call, ABC’s royal correspondent Omid Scoobie speculated: "The Queen has made it clear to the couple that at some point they are going to have to take on that cost themselves. But Buckingham Palace never comments on security matters. Time will tell."

However, multiple experts have since come forward saying that either Canada or the Queen needs to take care of the couple's security bill if Harry and Meghan, as well as their child's safety is to be ensured.

Princess Diana's former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, said during an appearance on ITV's 'Good Morning Britain' that the British monarch should be the one to pay for Harry and Meghan's security, which would be around £20 million ($25 million) a year to avoid a repeat of the tragedy that took his ex-client's life.

"We know what happened with Diana in 1997, because of the inefficient security that was afforded her at that time, we cannot go down the private sector here, because with security you need access to government intelligence in this country and abroad," he said, Mirror reported. "The answer is, given the fact that the Queen subsidizes the security given to Beatrice and Eugenie, now is the time to look at the Queen herself, or even his father, should subsidize this security bill."

Dai Davies, former head of Royalty Protection, said that the "Canadians pulling out of any previous agreement could have severe consequences."

"It's very worrying because the Sussexes do need protection but they clearly hadn't thought any of this through before pulling the rather hasty trigger on their announcements they were leaving their royal roles. This is precisely one of the reasons the rest of the family would have advised them to wait to formulate proper, workable plans," he added.
