President Donald Trump acknowledged on Thursday night that the impeachment investigation against him has been "very hard" on his family. The president made the statement during a rally in Louisiana.

Trump slammed Democratic investigators, calling the entire process a "deranged impeachment witch hunt," however, he argued that the probe was proving to be a political boon for his 2020 re-election. The Republican president then went on to say: "I have one problem. And it has been very hard on my family."

"Impeachment, to me, is a dirty word. It’s been very unfair, very hard on my family. Me, it’s my whole life, it’s crazy," he said. "What a life I lead. You think this is fun, don’t you? But it’s been very hard on my family. Very, very hard."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched an impeachment inquiry in September after a whistleblower lodged a formal complaint, alleging that President Trump had sought favor from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky during a June phone call, asking him to investigate his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. The whistleblower also mentioned a possible quid pro quo involved as Trump held back US military aid to Ukraine. The House of Representatives initiated the public impeachment hearings on Wednesday.

President Trump, during the rally, reiterated his denial of any wrongdoing while dealing with Ukraine, and added that he had no need to ask the foreign leader to probe Biden and his family.

"We took down Bush, Clinton, Obama, with no experience, but I had you and we won," Trump said of his 2016 victory. "Think about that and then think about me, 'gee, let's get some help from Ukraine in order to beat sleepy Joe Biden'. I don't think so."

"The people of this country aren't buying it," Trump added, claiming that polls show Republicans have benefited from the impeachment probe. "We did nothing wrong," Trump insisted, "and they're doing nothing."

Trump was in Louisiana to give a political boost to Republican political donor Eddie Rispone who is running against Democrat John Bel Edwards in the upcoming gubernatorial contest. Edwards is vying for a second term as governor.

"If you want to defend your values, your jobs, and your freedom, then you need to replace radical John Bel Edwards with a true Louisiana patriot, Eddie Rispone," the president said.
