Trigger warning: Distressing details

In Portugal, a man allegedly forced his ex to watch him mutilate her new partner's genitals with knives and a Samurai sword after tying her up at their holiday home. The man allegedly tied the woman with electric cables at their holiday home in Gondufe, a small Portuguese village near the country’s northern border with Spain. He then reportedly tortured, and ultimately killed her 53-year-old boyfriend, Luis Miguel Fernandez, over a six-hour period as she watched helplessly.

The police launched a manhunt after the traumatized woman, Nuria Rodriguez Gonzalez, who needed hospital treatment for shock and injuries caused by the ties around her wrists and legs, managed to free herself. The search reportedly ended when cops discovered that the sole suspect, a man called Spaniard Carlos Sande Fidalgo, had died by suicide after throwing himself off a bridge. Reportedly, Fidalgo is said to have been unable to accept his former wife's new relationship.

After the incident, Fidalgo is believed to have fled the scene of the crime in his ex-wife's jeep before deliberately crashing it near the property and switching to a black BMW 740 he owned, which was found near the bridge. As per the Daily Mail, the body of Fidalgo, a real estate businessman based in the Galician city of Vigo in Spain, was found on Wednesday, August 19, morning near Rande Bridge spanning Vigo Bay. It was discovered around 10 a.m. by the coast guard participating in the search with the police. Spanish police alerted the police in Portugal of the discovery.

According to the Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias, the police suspect that Gonzalez's ex-husband placed a GPS tracker on her car so he could follow her movements following their split earlier this year.

All three people involved, including the victims, were initially described as Spanish although it later emerged the dead man's family had emigrated to France from their native Galicia in the sixties. Locals in the Galician town of Entrimo, where Fernandez's family originally came from, paid their last respects on Friday, August 21, as they gathered with home-made placards expressing their horror at the brutal murder.

Police sources said they were following a line of inquiry that the alleged killer broke into the property his ex and her new partner were renting after tracking them down, then acted out of jealousy after failing to accept the end of his marriage and his former wife’s new relationship.

Fidalgo and his former wife reportedly split in March this year.

Back at home in the U.S., earlier this year, a similar incident took place. In February, a man from Decatur, Georgia, reportedly pounced on the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend, choking and repeatedly punching him in the face after invading the woman’s home. The 24-year-old woman told police she had just walked into her apartment via a sliding glass door, followed by her new boyfriend, when her 28-year-old ex-boyfriend came in behind them and sprang his assault. A female neighbor reportedly rushed over to the apartment after hearing “loud banging/screaming” and found the two men fighting. The woman said that she had been in a dating relationship with her ex-boyfriend for five years and they have a son together. She said she ended the relationship two months before the incident and her former boyfriend had not lived with her since the end of November 2019.
