Deaf man sues Pornhub for disability discrimination, claims their videos don't have subtitles
Pornhub is being sued by a deaf man for not having subtitles on their x-rated videos, thereby violating the American Disabilities Act (ADA).
According to TMZ, the international porn site is facing a class-action lawsuit from Yaroslav Suris who claims its lack of subtitles is a denial of access. Suris said he couldn't get through the dialogue in a number of flicks for lack of subtitles. These included titles such as 'Hot Step Aunt Babysits Disobedient Nephew,' 'Sexy Cop Gets Witness to Talk' and 'Daddy 4K -- Allison comes to Talk About Money to Her Boys' Naughty Father.'
Back in 2018, Pornhub announced that they were enabling closed captioning for some of their videos. In fact, among rival porn sites RedTube, YouPorn, and Brazzers, it was found only the latter had an actual "closed caption" section for some of their videos.
Suris as per court documents believes his rights under ADA were violated due to a lack of closed captioning. According to the US Department of Labor, the ADA "prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government' programs and services."
Furthermore, Suris complained he and others had purchased Pornhub's premium subscription hoping they would be able to access the captions. Now, the disgruntled customer seeks an undisclosed amount in damages and for Pornhub to add closed captioning to its videos.
"We understand that Yaroslav Suris is suing Pornhub for claiming we've denied the deaf and hearing-impaired access to our videos," Corey Price, Vice President of Pornhub, said in a statement. "While we do not generally comment on active lawsuits, we'd like to take this opportunity to point out that we do have a closed captions category."
That said, Pornhub does have a "closed captioning" section for more than 400 videos.
