WISSINOMING, PHILADELPHIA: A security camera has captured a dramatic video of a brave Philadelphia man fighting back against two supposedly armed robbers, while shooting one, on Monday afternoon, July 11. According to Philadelphia police, the attempted robbery happened around 2 pm in the 4200 block of East Cheltenham Avenue in the city's Wissinoming district.

The 46-year-old victim was discovered with gunshot wounds to his buttocks and left ankle laying near the corner of Cheltenham and Erdrick street. He was only described as a Black male and was in stable condition when he was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital.

The violent altercation between the victim and one suspect which spills over onto the street from the sidewalk was captured on security footage. The victim grabbed the pistol away from the first suspect, and the footage indicates that while the victim was still on the ground, a second suspect ran up the street and started shooting. When the second suspect opened fire, the victim appeared to respond by striking him at least once.



 



 

According to investigators, both suspects, who were identified by police as Hispanic men, retreated to a dark-colored SUV and fled south on Erdrick Street. A weapon was found on the scene by the police. As of Tuesday afternoon, no one had been taken into custody.

In a similar incident in March 2022, a homeless man allegedly attacked a pregnant woman on a SEPTA bus in Philadelphia after she refused to give up her seat. Authorities reported that the woman was thrown into a metal post and struck in the face by the attacker, who was about 6'2". According to reports, the bus driver called transit police right away, but the man managed to escape.

Philadelphia has been struggling to contain a widespread crime wave. According to available police records as of Sunday, there have been 2,233 shooting events registered in the entire city this year, which is 6.59% more than the 2,095 occurrences reported during the same period last year. The published records also reveal that the number of shooting victims in the entire city climbed by 4.24% as it has risen to 1,229 from 1,179 during the same period in 2021. Statistics for citywide homicides, however, reflect a 6.48 percent decline from the same period in 2021, when 293 murders were reported, to the current figure of 274 murders.
