CLEVELAND, OHIO: An Ohio animal rights activist has been arrested and charged after she stabbed a woman because she was wearing fur, according to the police.

The incident took place at around 5.15 pm on Wednesday, November 20, when the victim, a babysitter, was dropping children off at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights for choir practice, according to Fox News.

Witnesses at the scene said they suddenly heard her screaming and saw her fall to the ground after suffering a stab wound. When police arrived at the scene, they found her lying on the ground in a pool of blood clutching her left side.

She had been stabbed twice in the arm and once in the abdomen, and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police also found a man pinning the perpetrator, 35-year-old Meredith Lowell, to the floor nearby, with Police Chief Annette Mecklenberg praising him and other church members for their bravery.

"They put their safety at risk," she said. "They were able to restrain her and hold her down until the police arrived. They are to be commended for their actions no doubt."

Lowell was subsequently charged with attempted murder and felonious assault in connection to the incident and is currently being held at the Cleveland Heights Jail on a $1 million bond.

While a motive is still unclear, police said that, based on an incident from 2012 where she hired a hitman to kill people wearing fur, she stabbed the victim because she was wearing fur boots.

"I would like to create an online community on Facebook which would allow me to find someone who is willing to kill someone who is wearing fur toward the end of October 2011 or early November 2011 or possibly January 2012 or February 2012 at the latest," she wrote in an online post at the time, according to her indictment.

Prosecutors said she had also passed a handwritten note to jail guards after her arrest telling them that, if she were to be released, she would hire another hitman or do the deed herself.

On that occasion, psychologists determined Lowell was not competent to stand trial because of her mental condition. However, it was also found that, while she was not competent to stand trial, she did not pose a risk to herself, the general public or to property.

She was arrested again in 2018 for stabbing another woman. She was charged with felonious assault and her case was transferred to mental health court, specialized for individuals with documented mental health issues.
