LONG PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA: Police officials have charged the son of former NFL linesman Barry Bennett and his wife Carol with two counts of second-degree murder after the two were killed in their rural home in Long Prairie, Minnesota, a town of about 3,500 about 100 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

The son, 22-year-old Dylan Josh Bennett, is still on the run and is suspected to be in Mexico. According to reports, the police believe that he shot his parents and then fled the country. The dead bodies of 63-year-old Bennett and his wife Carol, also 63, were found on Wednesday, August 21, afternoon. Investigators believe that they had been killed on Monday, August 19.

Benett had multiple gunshot wounds in the torso and head while Carol had been shot in the back and the torso, more than once, according to the complaint. Carol's car was missing while the son's car was at home. His 9mm handgun was also missing from the box. The complaint also stated that he had earlier had thoughts of murdering his parents when he was at a mental health treatment facility. On the day the couple was believed to have been murdered, a large sum was withdrawn from their account.

The complaint revealed that Carol's credit and debit cards had been used in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The car that went missing from their home was found in Columbus, Ohio. Authorities believe that he had taken a flight from Columbus to Cancun in Mexico.

The FBI has been roped in by the Todd County Sheriff's office to help nab Dylan. He was reportedly going to move to China soon and had plans of working there. Unfortunately, the plans had fallen through, said Jim Christopherson, Bennett's 81-year-old coach from 1974 to 1978. "Barry and his wife were super support to Dylan," Christopherson said. "They would have been the first ones to forgive Dylan for what he did. That was their attitude."

Bennett was a defensive lineman and played 11 seasons with New Orleans Saints, the New York Jets, and the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL, before retiring in 1988. "He never mentioned that he was an NFL player. When I found out I was like, 'What?' And it's because he was about the other person, making sure he was bringing out the best in them," said Amy Middendorf, a friend of the Bennett Family.

Authorities do not believe the public is in danger.
