"The NYPD is responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Ave, #Manhattan. The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time. Info is preliminary, more when available," the New York police department wrote on their Twitter account.
A police spokesman added: "It’s some type of explosion of unknown origin and the building is being evacuated as we speak."
Emergency responders have filled the streets and several blocks of Eighth Ave. have been shut down as a safety precaution. Traffic is being rerouted away from the area and the New York Fire department has said it was responding to an incident at the bus terminal.
Media reports said that at least one person had been detained after the explosion, which took place near the city's busy Port Authority terminal, close to Times Square. ABC News quotes police sources as saying that the explosion might have been the work of a pipe bomb, and according to cable networks, there is at least one injury.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal, which services commuter buses from New Jersey as well as long-distances ones by Greyhound and Peter Pan, is the largest in the US and serves more than 65 million people a year; or an average of 250,000 passengers a day.
