A 40-year-old mother was stabbed to death with a screwdriver while her two young children were sleeping in her New York apartment on October 13.

Around 8 am on Sunday, police responded to a 911 call from a Bronx address and found Luz Perez with multiple puncture wounds in her head and neck, 1010 WINS Radio reports.

When officers arrived at the residence, Perez was unconscious but still breathing. However, she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

Police believe the mother was first found by her two children, a five-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, who alerted a person who was entering the building by shouting from the window.

That person, who wishes to remain anonymous, immediately called the authorities.

The children revealed that their mother had a protective order against her estranged husband who was their biological father. The kids also recalled an incident from two weeks ago when Perez's estranged husband had allegedly burned her eye with a cigarette.

The former couple was reportedly involved in several other domestic violence incidents in the past. The two young children were subsequently taken to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries and trauma.

According to neighbor Joshua Pemberton, who lives on the top floor of the three-story building, the mother had moved into the first-floor apartment with her children just a couple of months ago.

He said he didn't hear anything on Saturday night. However, he was surprised to find detectives scouring the area when he awoke Sunday morning.

“It’s really shocking to hear,” he said. “There's a lot of little kids in the building.”

While no one has been arrested over Perez's murder as yet, detectives could be seen coming to and from her apartment throughout the day.

The medical examiner is currently working to establish the official cause and manner of death, police said.

The investigation continues.
