If anyone can reinvigorate the genre of romantic comedy, it's Gina Rodriguez. The actress has signed on to star in and produce Someone Great, a romantic comedy that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is helming for Netflix.

Someone Great centers on a woman who experiences a tough break-up and seeks adventure in New York City with her two best friends before moving across the country for her dream job.

The story is described as being about loss, growing up and, above all, the everlasting bond of female friendships.

The production is eyeing an April start date, though further casting details and a planned release date have yet to be announced.

Not only does Someone Great mark a potentially large success for its streaming platform, but it also marks the latest in a trend of promising romantic comedies that may lean into a rom-com formula, yet still put friendships between women at the forefront of the story.

Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson of Feigco are producing the movie, as are Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron of production house Likely Story. Rodriguez will produce via her shingle I Can and I Will Productions.

"I always wanted to watch a romantic comedy where a woman could be her own white knight," Robinson tweeted. "A movie that’s central love story revolves around female friendship. And now I get to make one."

Robinson reportedly worked on the script for 8 years, until Paul Feig was attached to produce with Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has won a Golden Globe for her work on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, which is now in its fourth season. She currently is on the big screen opposite Natalie Portman in Annihilation, the latest sci-fi project from Alex Garland.

Rodriguez is also the voice of Carmen Sandiego in an upcoming Netflix revival, which is set to premiere in 2019.
