New Jersey school bus driver overdosed on heroin and crashed into a tree with 12 special needs children on board

57-year-old Lisa Byrd is facing charges of 12 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Driving While Impaired, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in connection to the incident.

A New Jersey school bus driver has been arrested and charged after she suffered a drug overdose while transporting special needs children. 57-year-old Lisa Byrd, of Newark, and a driver of F & A Transport in East Orange, overdosed on heroin while behind the wheel.

According to a press release by the Newark Police Department, at approximately 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, the bus which Byrd was driving to transport 12 children from 14th Avenue School crashed into a tree. The Daily Mail reported that CCTV footage from the crash showed the bus first rolling across the road before mounting a curb on the other side and going on to hit the tree. The children, who were all of special needs and between the ages of five and 13, were luckily unhurt in the collision.
