'My 600-lb Life': Seana's motivation to lose weight spirals down after her mom abandons her
Seana Collins weighs 659lbs at the age of 22 but she has been struggling with weight and food ever since she was a child. Seana first started eating large amounts of food as a way to cope with the abuse that she faced due to her father. While her father was out of the picture when she was 16, Seana's relationship with food got stronger.
She started turning to food to cope with her emotions and felt a level of comfort every time she took a bite of her favorite food. However, after struggling with her weight for a long time, Seana knew that she had to change things in her life. This led her to meet Dr Younan Nowzaradan who informed her that she would only be approved for the weight loss surgery if she lost some weight.
Dr Nowzaradan told Seana that she would have to move to Texas if she wanted to take the program and asked her to be on a strict diet for two months which would allow her to lose 80lbs. Seana got anxious about how she would lose so much weight.
Unfortunately, she decided to wait it out and not move to Texas for the program. Two months passed and Seana struggled to call Dr Nowzaradan and inform him that she was not following the diet. However, things changed in the third month when her caregiver, Derrickus, told her that he would move down to Houston with her if she was serious about the weight loss program.
Seana's mother, Cricket Collins, also asked her to give Dr Nowzaradan a call. She finally gathered the courage to call Dr Nowzaradan and informed him about what had happened. Dr Nowzaradan asked her to lose 50lbs in a month if she wanted to get approved for the program.
Seana agreed but unfortunately, her motivation did not last for long. Seana visits Dr Nowzaradan again after a month but she confesses to the camera that she had lost the diet chart yet again and is unable to print them out because she could not find the e-mail. Seana's carelessness led her to lose only 1lb and now she weighed 658lbs.
Seana then met Dr Nowzaradan, who was surprised to find that she had lost the diet chart again. He was disappointed that she did not choose to call him and instead went on continuing with her harmful eating habits. However, he did not give up on her. He asked her to lose more weight before their next visit and asked her not to lose the diet chart this time.
After the appointment, Seana was disappointed that Dr Nowzaradan did not understand her and became emotional when she found out she will have to lose 80lbs before the next visit. Tragically, things turned upside down when Seana's mother Cricket asked her to move out of the house and start living on her own. She also stopped paying Derrickus for taking care of her, which left Seana struggling by herself.
Even after nearly six months, Seana was still unable to stick to the diet plan and she finally decided to call Dr Nowzaradan and tell him what had happened. Dr Nowzaradan asks Seana to come down to Houston so she can carry on with her weight loss. She then managed to ask her mother for help and Cricket booked a flight for Seana to go to Houston.
Seana was worried about how she would make it on her own as the last time she had traveled on a plane was when she was eight. Despite all the worry, she decided to be strong and go ahead with the plan. After moving to Houston, Dr Nowzaradan advised her to lose 50lbs and Seana was all set to pay him another visit.
This time, she was happy with the results when she found out that she weighed 623lbs and had lost 35lbs. Though Seana was happy, Dr Nowzaradan was not. He told her that she had to work harder to prove that she is committed to the weight loss program. He also advised her to start therapy to see if it makes her feel any better.
He gave her two months to lose more weight and advised her to follow the diet while also doing some exercises daily. Seana agreed and decided to work harder after seeing how much weight she had lost last time. However, she was not looking forward to therapy as it had never made any difference to her.
However, she knew that she had made a commitment and so she decided to go ahead with the therapy. Unfortunately, the therapy sent her into another emotional spiral and she started eating ice creams and junk food while adding that she had lost the diet chart yet again. When Seana went to meet Dr Nowzaradan again after a month, she weighed 636lbs and had put on 13 lbs.
While Seana felt disappointed, Dr Nowzaradan decided not to give up on her and advised her to follow the diet again and work harder than before. He put her on a diet which allowed her to lose 10lbs a week. Now, it was up to Seana if she wanted to lose weight.
Seana understood what Dr Nowzaradan was saying but struggled to stick to the diet by being alone and having to do everything by herself. When she came to meet Dr Nowzaradan and weighed herself, she realized that she had gained 25lbs and now weighed 661lbs. Dr Nowzaradan was not happy to see how their conversations were not yielding any good results.
Seana tried to explain to Dr Nowzaradan that the therapy was doing her good but he informed her that it wasn't showing in the results. Dr Nowzaradan told her that she was just 23 and it was important for her to decide if she wanted to change her life or continue on the same path.
He then asked her to lose weight if she was serious about the weight loss but until then, Dr Nowzaradan told her that he could not approve her for the surgery. However, he gave her a year to prove that she deserves to be approved.
