Mother plucks 15-month-old daughter's unibrow with tweezer for 'aesthetic reasons', causes uproar

The mother claimed that her baby's facial hair was very fair in the beginning but had recently darkened, thereby making the unibrow very prominent
UPDATED JUN 19, 2019

It is common knowledge that if you share parenting advice with others, someone is almost always going to have a problem with it.

In one such incident, a mother was fiercely criticized online after she cited "aesthetic reasons" for plucking her 15-month-old daughter's eyebrows with a tweezer.

The parent, who has not been identified for legal reasons, faced major backlash on her post on a Reddit forum, Mirror reports.

"I gave birth 15 months ago to a beautiful baby girl. She's always been hairy," the mum wrote in the post. "It's nice in a way because she was born with hair on her head and she has really full eyelashes. But she's also developed a unibrow."

She then explained that her baby's facial hair was very fair in the beginning, but over the last few months, it had darkened, thereby making the unibrow very prominent.

"For aesthetic reasons, I decided to pluck it while she slept," she continued.

"If she woke up I would stop. I managed to get it all off in a couple of days. I didn't really think of this as being a bad thing, but a fellow mom friend of mine stopped by for a playdate a few days ago. She's an extremely observant person and she mentioned my daughter's eyebrows. I was honest and said I plucked the middle while she slept. She had this horrified look and said she was surprised that I did that."

The mother said she resorted to asking people for feedback online after her friend's reaction to her decision made her feel "insecure."

However, many social media users were rather offended by her actions.

"Wtf is wrong with someone who cares about their baby's EYEBROWS?! Way to cement those self-esteem issues nice and early, 10/10 parenting," one commented.

"Potentially preventing bullying years from now hardly justifies causing a baby literal pain," another wrote. "Like I, an adult woman who gets her eyebrows threaded every two weeks, am literally cringing at the idea of inflicting even 1/10th of the pain that I deal with on a literal baby and tweezing is SOOO much worse than threading in my opinion."

"You're seriously applying adult beauty standards to a child—a baby in fact," a third user opined.

"The kid's unibrow makes ZERO difference to her experience as a baby, but her mom pulling out her hairs one by one because she isn't pretty enough is going to carry a lifetime of complications."

Nonetheless, there were some commenters who were okay with what she did.

"She did it while her kiddo was sleeping, and stopped if she woke up. She didn’t pin the kid down and pluck her while she screamed and struggled," a user pointed out.
