What is the real-life story behind 'MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story'?

The upcoming season will center on the notorious case of the Menendez brothers, who gained infamy for killing their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home in 1989.

Aged 21 and 18 when they committed the crime, the brothers claimed they acted in self-defense, citing years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. However, the prosecution argued that their motive was greed and the desire to inherit their parents' fortune.

Much of the series will likely unfold in the courtroom, where the highly publicized trial lasted for months, captivating the nation's attention. Eventually, the brothers were charged for their actions.

Initially held in separate prisons, the older brother, Lyle, was incarcerated at Mule Creek State Prison from 1996 to 2018, while Erik served his sentence at Pleasant Valley Prison. They reunited in 2018 at the R J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

In 2021, the brothers made headlines once again, with many people on social media rallying to their defense.
