'La casa de Papel' or 'Money Heist', Netflix’s globally-popular Spanish crime drama, is coming to an end. On Friday, July 31, Netflix on its various social media platforms announced that the fifth season of the series would be its last. On its official Twitter and Instagram accounts, Netflix shared a photo of one of the show’s iconic Salvador Dali masks -- cracked, soiled, and lying in dirt -- and wrote, “Part 5: The heist comes to an end.”

Fans were expectedly devastated by the news. One fan wrote on Twitter, “2020 is becoming worse. The end is near.” Another wrote, “I’m not crying. You are!” Yet another wrote, "Why is this happening? Why does it have to end?" in all caps.

But most importantly, fans seemed to be asking when this end would arrive. So far, Netflix hasn’t announced when the final season will air. According to Entertainment Weekly, however, ‘Money Heist’ will begin production on its final season on Monday, August 3, in Denmark. Production for the ten-episode final season will also take place in Spain and Portugal. ‘Money Heist’ starting its final season’s production comes as a number of Netflix series are also set to resume work after being forced to a halt amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Alex Pina’s heist series ended Season 4, which dropped on Netflix on April 2 this year, with a major cliffhanger where Alicia gets her hands on The Professor while Lisbon manages to get inside the bank and join the rest of the team. The upcoming final season is expected to pick up right from where it ended. It will likely show Alicia take the game ahead after capturing The Professor.

The fourth season saw The Professor's team declare war on the authorities during their job at the Bank of Spain and ended with the death of one critical member of the team.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Pina said, “We are moving from a chess game -- a mere intellectual strategy -- to a war strategy: attack and contention.”

“Adrenaline is within ‘Money Heist’s DNA. Every thirty seconds things take place and disrupt the characters, a turn of the screw to the action. The adrenaline mixed with feelings arising from absolutely complex, magnetic, unforeseeable characters will continue until the end of the heist to the Bank of Spain,” Pina said of the final season. “However, the gang will now be pushed into irreversible situations, into a wild war: it is the most epic part of all the parts we’ve shot.”

Pina further said, "We have spent almost a year thinking about how to destroy the band. How to put The Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters. The result is the fifth season of 'La Casa de Papel'. The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season."

Money Heist stars Alvaro Morte, Ursula Corbero, Jamie Lorente, Miguel Herrán, Darko Peric, Itziar Ituno, Paco Tous, Alba Flores, Esther Acebo, Itziar Ituño, Enrique Arce, Kiti Mánver, Juan Fernández, and Mario de la Rosa. Season 5 is all set to see a few new faces as well, including Miguel Ángel Silvestre of ‘Sense8’ and ‘Narcos’ fame, and Patrick Criado of ‘Vivir sin permiso’ fame. What their roles are in the final season, however, is yet to be revealed.

The first four seasons of 'La casa de Papel' or 'Money Heist' are available for viewing on Netflix.
