With Joe Biden becoming the president-elect and Kamala Harris the vice-president-elect, many including Republican Utah Senator Mitt Romney congratulated the duo. Romney, referred to as "President Trump’s main Republican foil in Congress" by The New York Post, congratulated Joe Biden's historic win on Saturday. He praised both the president-elect and vice president-elect calling them, people of "goodwill and admirable character.”

According to reports, Biden was the most-voted for a presidential candidate in the history of the country with 75 million ballots. In a post tweeted on the social media channel, Romney wrote, "Ann and I extend our congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. We know both of them as people of goodwill and admirable character. We pray that God may bless them in the days and years ahead."

The tweet comes a day after Romney blasted Trump for making series of allegations without evidence on Thursday night in a speech that was widely condemned. The former Republican presidential candidate said, "He is wrong to say that the election was rigged, corrupt and stolen," AFP cited Romney's statement. "Doing so damages the cause of freedom here and around the world, weakens the institutions that lie at the foundation of the republic, and recklessly inflames destructive and dangerous passions."

While this doesn't come as a surprise as many extended their well-wishes to Biden and Kamala, it is incumbent to also remember that Sen. Romney was the only lawmaker from the Republicans that voted to impeach President Trump earlier in 2020. He was not shy in his opinion but rather spoke out quite openly. As Trump is known to do to those that defy or undermine him, he did proceed to call Romney a "failed presidential candidate". Romney was also uninvited to the CPAC by American Conservative Union, reported The New York Post.

Romney in March said he is already planning for a post-Trump Republican era, adding that Trump is not going to be the president forever. The senator, while talking to The Atlantic, said: "The president will not be the president forever. Berating another person, or calling them names, or demeaning a class of people, not telling the truth - those are not private things. If during the campaign you pay a porn star $130,000, that now comes into the public domain." Romney, a vocal critic of Trump despite being from the same party, had also denounced the president's withdrawal of troops from Syria earlier this month, and had deemed the move a "bloodstain on the annals of American history."

During the heavy days of the election, when Trump was claiming "voter fraud" and presuming that the election was rigged, Romney posted his thoughts about POTUS's actions quite clearly on Twitter. He said, "The President is within his rights to request recounts, to call for an investigation of alleged coting irregularities where evidence exists, and to exhaust legal remedies -- doing these things is consistent with our election process. He is wrong to say that the election was rigged, corrupt and stolen -- doing so damages the cause of freedom here and around the world, weakens the institutions that lie at the foundations of the Republic, and recklessly inflames destruction and dangerous passions."

According to reports, Trump said the election is "far from over" and is refusing to concede. It was reported by CNN that POTUS's son-in-law Jared Kushner, Ivanka's husband, has asked him to so. The Associated Press also reported that sources close to Trump claim that he may "never" formally concede.
