Former First Lady Michelle Obama has issued an extended statement on Twitter in the wake of the election results being announced in the favor of Joe Biden. She congratulated President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris for their win amid "hate, chaos, and division."

"I’m beyond thrilled that my friend @JoeBiden and our first Black and Indian-American woman Vice President, @KamalaHarris, are headed to restore some dignity, competence, and heart at the White House. Our country sorely needs it," Michelle Obama wrote, pairing it with a celebratory photograph of Biden and Harris. In her Twitter thread, Michelle also took the opportunity to thank the American citizens for the monumental turnout at the polls for Presidential elections 2020. However, she also noted that voting or winning in one election is not a magic wand, and this is just the beginning, and a lot of work needs to happen.

She also addressed voters who lent their support to Donald Trump in the elections, shutting them down fiercely. "Let’s remember that tens of millions of people voted for the status quo, even when it meant supporting lies, hate, chaos, and division," she tweeted. "We’ve got a lot of work to do to reach out to these folks in the years ahead and connect with them on what unites us."

She also tweeted that the road to progress will be "uphill" and reiterated the importance of democracy and how it can't be taken for granted. She also urged voters to turn out in "greater numbers" in the upcoming Senate runoffs in Georgia and every local election. "So it’s up to us to stay engaged and informed, to keep speaking out and marching on. We’ve got to vote in even greater numbers in the upcoming Senate runoffs in Georgia—and every state and local election going forward," she tweeted. "We’ve got to promise each other that our focus in this election won’t be an anomaly, but the rule. That’s how we can not only feel this way right now but in the months and years ahead. It’s the only way we’ll build a nation worthy of our children," she wrote proclaiming hope for years to come before congratulating the new White House one more time.

Many social media users were not in concurrence with the former first lady's thoughts and a lot of them hit back at her. "Division and hatred started under YOUR husband's failed presidency as you abused regular Americans for simply disagreeing with policy. YOUR party has continued to abuse Americans for the past 12 YEARS. YOU BUILT THAT. You hate America and always have... it shows," wrote a user.

"This is an extremely condescending, divisive & hateful comment. You’re saying that these 10’s of millions are “less than”, those who voted for Biden. You are fueling division & hate. This is exactly what I expect from Biden & Harris. Thanks for amplifying those points," wrote another irate user. "Keep talking down to us and misunderstanding us. That’s a good start," read another tweet. "A vote for Trump means “supporting lies, hate, chaos, and division?” If you want us to come together, blanket statements such as these don’t help," tweeted another. "Way to keep the Divide by stating it in your “victory Tweet”. We’re never going to progress forward if you alienate half the country," read another tweet.
