Michelle Obama finally reveals what was in the Tiffany gift box Melania gave her on Inauguration Day

After Michelle said that she did not know what to do with the gift, many on social media pointed out that she started the tradition by giving a similar box to the first lady before her — Laura Bush.

Michelle Obama finally reveals what was in the Tiffany gift box Melania gave her on Inauguration Day

The pictures and stills of an awkward gift exchange between the former First Lady Michelle Obama and the current First Lady Melania Trump on President Donald Trump's inauguration Day went viral last year. Although more than the awkwardness between the two, what everyone was curious to know at the moment was: What exactly was in that blue Tifanny's gift box?

Well, Michelle Obama finally unraveled the mystery during Ellen DeGeneres show — in her first television interview since exiting the White House.

Going by the stills recorded of the moment, the former first lady appeared to give Melania the side-eye after she received the large gift in January 2017, befuddled what to do with it.

"When the transfer was happening, when Donald Trump and his wife were moving into the White House, there was a gift exchange," the talk show host Ellen DeGeneres reminded the viewers in an episode airing Thursday.

"The Tiffany’s box," Obama said, nodding and acknowledging DeGeneres' statement.

"There’s all this protocol. This is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here," the former first lady added.

"Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, 'OK, what am I supposed to do with this gift?'" Michelle said, narrating what happened during the incident as a clip of the exchange played on a large screen behind her.

"Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box, and I’m thinking, 'Do we take the picture with (it)?' And then my husband saved the day — see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, 'What do you do with the box?'" Michelle continued.

Then the former first lady finally revealed that the blue box contained a "lovely frame."

However, after Michelle said that she did not know what to do with the gift, many on social media pointed out that she started the tradition by giving a gift box to the first lady before her — Laura Bush — a similar but cream in color gift box.

Michelle could have taken a cue from the Bush's stealthy moves back in 2009 when Barack Obama took office. In a similar clip of Obama's Inauguration Day, Laura Bush can be seen discretely hiding the box with a red ribbon behind Barack Obama's back for the photo op at the event.
