Netflix has announced a documentary about former First Lady Michelle Obama's post-White House life and work. The announcement came on Monday and the documentary film will premiere in May.

In a statement about the project, Obama said, "Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with."

She further added, "In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud."

She also stressed on the importance of this documentary now more than ever and said, "I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty."

Release date:

'Becoming' will release May 6 on Netflix worldwide.

Plot:

According to Netflix, 'Becoming' is an intimate look into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House. The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories.

Trailer:

A clip from the documentary that was released on the day of the announcement showed Obama meet a group of girls in Philadelphia. She spoke about how life after her time as the First Lady was not about going back to old habits and an old life but about charting a new path ahead. The 90-second video also shows how Obama hopes to spend a longer time with young girls and feels that the tour could give her the opportunity to do so. Answering one of the girl's questions, Obama also explained how she is going through what the young women around her are going through.

She says that she is also exploring what she likes doing and herself now more than ever because for about eight years, very little of who she was had been explored, she confessed.
