'Merry Happy Whatever' Season 1 Episode 5: Don's Christmas plans get sidelined as Patsy-Todd announce pregnancy news, Matt prepares to propose Emmy

Don Quin struggles to find a moment of peace, in which he can really be with his kids and have good, good Christmas.
PUBLISHED NOV 28, 2019

All Don Quinn (Dennis Quaid) wants for Christmas is for his family to be together and enjoy a good mass at the Church. But his plans start to fall apart when his kids, along with their partners/ spouses, began springing their own issues on him, albeit gently.

But, that doesn't mean there aren't moments of happiness - Patsy (Siobhan Murphy) and Todd (Adam Rose) share the big news with the family as they announce they are expecting a baby. Matt (Brent Morin) plans a Christmas proposal for Emmy (Bridgit Mendler). It was almost a merry Christmas for the Quinns when a major discussion on the baby's (Patsy & Todd's) religion came up and that was the beginning of all things downhill.

Don called dibs on the baby being brought up with Catholic traditions, while Todd said they could go for both Catholic & Jewish traditions for now and in the later stages, the kid can decide for himself/ herself. Don's enough-is-enough came sooner than expected and he showed his displeasure over the idea by storming off to the church all by himself.

Amid all the chaos, Emmy finds it hard to decide whether or not she should move back to Philadelphia. It's getting increasingly difficult to take a call on it given that she has a job, life, and Matt in Los Angeles. Kayla (Ashley Tisdale), who is going through a separation with Alan (Tyler Ritter), relies on a makeover to help her move on from her past. Meanwhile, Matt accidentally finds Emmy's offer letter for a job in Philly, which leaves him extremely disappointed and causes him to second guess his idea of a Christmas proposal.

It's the most joyous, festive time of the year and we have a group of people fighting inner demons, unable to fully commit to the festive spirit. The Quinns and the 'Outlaws' - Todd, Matt, and Joy (Elizabeth Ho) - have their own set of troubles that are making it hard for them to enjoy the holiday season.

Even though at one point you begin to empathize with them, they may come across as selfish because in discussing and pondering over their issues over and over again, all they are doing is ruining Don's Christmas plans without even realizing it. By the time the family gathers in the living area, ready to leave for church, they realize Don has already left. This makes them sort of sad and they quickly head out. The episode closes with them having a good time at the mass.

A family that smiles together, stays together? We'll have to wait for that.

Catch the premiere of 'Merry Happy Whatever' on November 28 only on Netflix.
