A huge controversy on US President Donald Trump and his stance on military troops erupted after a bombshell The Atlantic story left social media staggered. As per the report, the 74-year-old said in 2018 before canceling a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris: “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers...” and allegedly called more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

This comes on the heels of the US Presidential Elections 2020 and while Trump categorically denied calling them “losers and suckers”, the news was soon confirmed by several other news outlets like The Associated Press, Washington Post, and Fox News. Even then, POTUS and FLOTUS took to Twitter to tell their followers that it was just another piece of "fake news".

Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: "The Atlantic Magazine is dying, like most magazines, so they make up a fake story in order to gain some relevance. Story already refuted, but this is what we are up against. Just like the Fake Dossier. You fight and fight, and then people realize it was a total fraud!"

In his support, Melania Trump tweeted: "@TheAtlantic story is not true. It has become a very dangerous time when anonymous sources are believed above all else, & no one knows their motivation. This is not journalism - It is activism. And it is a disservice to the people of our great nation."

However, with so many media outlets confirming the story, it was too late for them to say anything in defense. Soon, the Internet started slamming both of them for their “birther” remarks and couldn't believe they were trying to defend their stance.

Back in April 2011, Melania appeared on the Joy Behar Show and supported her husband's allegations that Obama wasn't born in the state of Hawaii. As per a Teen Vogue report, the term birtherism came into existence and was defined as a conspiracy theory where Donald Trump championed that Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States, making him constitutionally ineligible to be president. Birtherism was deemed racist as no other US president was ever questioned about his birthplace until Obama — the first black president — took office.

"It’s not only Donald who wants to see [Obama's birth certificate], it’s American people who voted for him and who didn’t vote for him. They want to see that," she claimed on the show. When Behar said the birth certificate was already out on the Internet, Melania responded: "We feel it’s different than a birth certificate."

One Twitter user wrote: "So are you going to believe a birther who was an illegal immigrant before she somehow got an Einstein Visa for posing nude, or a thoroughly vetted piece that even Fox admits is true?" and another said, "Melania confirms she's trash. Had forgotten what a truly appalling birther bully Melania was. Trump and Melania are an appalling couple who deserve each other." Another said, "Remember when Obama had to deal with all that “birther” bullshit. I forget who was pushing that..."

"Ms. Birther, We all heard him and saw him denigrate POWs, refuse to fly flag half staff for McCain, berate Gold Star fams, use his foundation to steal from vets. I didn’t need the Atlantic to tell me what he thought of our troops," one wrote and another said, "Melania is a birther conspiracy theorist. Who cares what she thinks. She is cray cray." Sharing a video clip, one Twitter user posted, "Birther who went on TV to spread ridiculous falsehoods, based on nonexistent sources, about Barack Obama not being born in America, is scolding us about how "very dangerous" it is to report facts verified from numerous sources by numerous reporters?"

"Birther cheerleader@FLOTUS You advocate racism You married a racist You advocate racism. You married a racist. YOU VERBALLY ADVOCATED RACISM toward Obama! F**k You!" one tweet read and another said, "You have zero credibility, birther. The AP and FoxNews have independently verified the story. But you really don't care, do you?

With all the backlash on social media, will Melania ever log on to Twitter again in support of her husband? It never seems to work out, does it?
