Update: Macy Gray tried to clear some air after her transphobic comments did not settle well with the LGBTQIA community. In a since-deleted tweet, Gray said, "I got nothing but love for lgbt+ and transgender communities. i’ve been a supporter since day one and never a fake one. my statement on piers morgan was GROSSLY misunderstood. i respect everyone’s right to be whoever they wana be."

The singer was criticized heavily by the London-based festival Mighty Hoopla where the 54-year-old singer performed last month. Taking to their Instagram, the festival posted, "We are extremely disappointed by the comments made by Macy Gray on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored TalkTV. As an artist at our 2022 event, we would like to make it clear that we do not agree with the insensitive and transphobic statement she made. Trans people and their bodies are not up for debate, and cis TV personalities and the channels that hire them need to stop discussing them on air. Mighty Hoopla will always stand with our trans family.”

Macy Gray has made some bold remarks on transgender women saying that just because someone got a gender reassessment surgery, doesn't mean that they should be considered to be a woman. The singer joined Piers Morgan to talk about racial inequality, transgender identity, and more. She explained that getting surgery "doesn't make you a woman." When asked about her definition of what a woman is, she said that a woman is a human being with "boobs" and "vagina." This also comes in during the time when FINA banned transgender women like Lia Thomas from competing in women's swimming events.

While appearing on the TalkTv Show with Piers Morgan, the 54-year-old singer said, "I will say this and not everybody's going to hate me but, as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn't make you a woman. Sorry." Host Morgan seemingly agreed with an affirmative "Right." Gray continued, "If you want me to call you her, I will because that's what you want. But that doesn't make you a woman just because I called you 'her', and just because you got surgery." The discussion started when Morgan talked about how, at times, there is a clear difference between body superiority amongst biological women and transgender women which creates a clearly visible bias. One such case recently surfaced when Ricci Tres, 29, also known as Ricci And Tres, a 29-year-old biological man who identifies as a woman beat a 13-year-old girl women’s skateboarding contest held in New York.

Host Morgan then talked about the difference between biological sex and gender identity which allows one to "identity however they like," and finished his sentence by saying that the mechanics still remain the same and will never be changed. Macy said, "'A woman goes through a completely unique experience and surgery, and finding yourself doesn't change that. Being a little girl is a whole epic book, you know? You can't have that just because you want to be a woman." The duo also discussed the backlash people like JK Rowling receive from the "cancel culture mob". Macy said, “I don’t think you should be called transphobic just because you don’t agree…,” she said. “There is a lot of judgment and throwing stones at people for just saying what it is. Do you know what I mean? A woman goes through a completely unique experience and surgery and finding oneself doesn’t change that,” she said. “Being a little girl is a whole epic book, you know? You can’t have that just because you want to be a woman.” Her replies, surprisingly got positive traction on the Internet by her fans or people who simply agreed with her.

People support Macy Gray for her transgender women's remarks

One user wrote, "I stand with Bette Midler, Macy Gray, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, JK Rowling, Pamela Paul, Sharron Davies, Mara Yamauchi and all the other women who stand up for women's rights in the face of attacks from all sides." Another user tweeted, "@MacyGraysLife love you!!! Thank you for speaking up. This can’t be easy but it is right. You are a legend x."

One user wrote compared her remarks with that of Bette Midler saying, "It's really sad how the truth has become the enemy these days. Bette Milder and Macy Gray didn't say anything wrong and they are not transphobic for saying what they said." Another user said explained Macy Gray had an opinion of herself and said, "Y’all calling Macy Gray transphobic is crazy. She stated she doesn’t mind calling someone a woman (out of respect) but she has her own opinion on what it means to be a woman. Just like trans people can have opinions….she wasn’t disrespectful at all."

Let's not forget that Piers Morgan himself came in support of the singer and tweeted, "Macy Gray, as she predicted, is already being abused, hounded, shamed & branded ‘transphobic’ by the usual vile, vicious mob who attack women that defend women’s rights. I stand with you @MacyGraysLife - thanks for your courage and honesty." Another user wrote, "What a day. Macy Gray speaking facts too. The vast majority of everyone's fav celebs think the same as @jk_rowling. And it doesn't mean any of us hate trans ppl. But women do not have penises and if that causes a culture war then so be it."
