North Hollywood shooting: Officer injured, suspect arrested after police tackle armed man barricaded in home
LOS ANGELES: An armed person with a rifle was holed up inside a North Hollywood home on Sunday (June 7) evening. Police were alerted about a man wielding a rifle and shots were fired in a residence on Bakman Avenue near Otsego Street around 7pm local time. The North Hollywood Police Department responded to the calls as the suspect barricaded himself inside the house after an altercation with the police. The North Hollywood PD alerted the public to stay indoors if they lived in the area and asked others to stay away from the scene.
The suspect was apprehended and one officer was injured. The Los Angeles Police Department's social media account tweeted, "There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting at the scene of this barricaded suspect in North Hollywood, with the suspect in custody. Preliminary info is one officer injured. Public Information Officer responding to the scene & we’ll provide details as they become available."
No further details were available as the investigation remained in its early stages. The extent and type of the officer’s injuries and whether the suspect was injured are yet to be known. It was not immediately known if anyone was struck by gunfire or who fired the shots. The identity of the suspect has not been revealed yet. However, many have taken to social media to point out that the suspect was peacefully walked out in handcuffs. One user tweeted, "He was WALKED into custody!! Because he’s white. We have our Black brothers and sisters murdered for no reason while a cop killer is taken into custody and his rights are respected. The disparity is sickening!! Not that the white ppl should die either but there must be justice!!"
Another shared, "Lmao 'yeah, it is an old white guy'. Of course it is. Have you seen what’s happening? He wouldn’t be walking out in cuffs if he wasn’t white." What a time to be alive." One user shared, "Really interesting how the police were able to arrest the old white man shooting up #NorthHollywood tonight without violence. It’s almost like, they have the ability to do that and choose to be violent towards black people??" Another wrote, "Hearing that the #NorthHollywood shooter was a white man with a shot gun who injured one officer and was taken in alive. Just last week a Latino man was shot and killed by @LAPDNorthHwdDiv for wielding a 'sword-type-weapon'." Another tweeted, "Sirens and helicopters aplenty here in #NorthHollywood. White dude who shot a cop peacefully escorted out of his building after I watched peaceful, law-abiding citizens get the s**t kicked out of them all week long for speaking out against racism & police brutality. All is fine."
Many took to social media to also point out the disparity between the current situation and George Floyd's arrest. One user tweeted, "A white man drove into a group of protesters- he is Alive. Another white man was actively shooting in #NorthHollywood - he is Alive. #GeorgeFloyd used a counterfeit bill - murdered by police," while another wrote, "I would LOVE to hear the thoughts of the people who say George Floyd died cuz he was resisting arrest. What do you have to say about this arrest of a white man who shot a cop? #Northhollywood."
