TikTok reinstates Lizzo swimsuit videos after both parties 'talk'
Popular Grammy award-winning singer Lizzo was left feeling a bit miffed with viral video app TikTok after they decided to remove some clips that featured the plus-sized artiste in a bathing suit. The 'Truth Hurts' singer decided to call them out on it, unable to comprehend why they would do such a thing.
Lizzo, who regularly engages with her fans on social media platforms, including TikTok, decided to call out the video-sharing service on what she saw as a double standard after she realized that several videos featuring her in a bathing suit were being pulled down, but other girls' videos that featured them in bathing suits were being conveniently allowed to stay up.
In her response video that took TikTok to task, Lizzo can be seen letting her hair done while lip-syncing to the viral hit, 'I Know', which coincidentally, was made popular by another TikTok user, Erin McMillen.
"TikTok keeps taking down my videos with me in my bathing suits," wrote Lizzo over the clip. She went on to say that TikTok "allows other videos with girls in bathing suits." She then questioned them directly, going, "I wonder why? TikTok we need to talk."
The video immediately went viral on the platform, with many fans outraged at their stance on the matter. Lizzo is famously outspoken on body positivity and the body image issues that plague young women of this generation.
This served as a rallying cry for her followers on what seemed like yet another double standard against ultra curvy women. While TikTok's community guidelines do prohibit pornography, there has been no mention at all of any bathing suits being deemed taboo.
And given Lizzo's substantial clout on social media, TikTok was swift to issue an explanation for their actions, hoping to limit the damage done.
In a quick turnaround, the viral video sharing service promptly reinstated the video of Lizzo in a bathing suit. A representative for TikTok said that Lizzo's video had initially been flagged because they thought it was in violation of its community guidelines.
It looked like the 'Juice' singer had been flashing the camera when she lifted up her dress. TikTok later determined that Lizzo had been wearing a bathing suit, and as of Wednesday, February 4, the video was put back up.
"I just want to express how amazing Lizzo is as a creator, as an artist, and as a trendsetter," TikTok's spokeswoman said. "And our community loves her, so immediately, as soon as we saw it might be an issue, looked into it."
"And our team is in touch with her team, so when she's like 'Tik Tok let's talk', our team talks," the spokeswoman added. Well, we're glad Lizzo realized she'd been wronged and made TikTok talk it out with her. More power to you, Lizzo!
