'Little Voice' Episode 8 Preview: Samuel comforts Bess after a traumatic night, things may change between them
Apple TV+’s ‘Little Voice’ started on a happy-ish note but things have only gotten darker ever since. Our heroine, Bess (Brittany O’Grady), has a complicated life. Her brother Louie (Kevin Valdez) is on the spectrum. Her father Percy (Chuck Cooper) is an alcoholic musician who seems to have slipped off the wagon after years of sobriety. Despite finding the strength and the courage to perform her beautiful music, Bess seems unable to find a record label to take her up.
And on the relationship front, things are even worse. She is madly in love with Ethan (Sean Teale) and they can’t be together for the simple fact that Ethan already lives with his girlfriend. He likes Bess as well, but he has obligations he simply can’t ignore. Amid all of this, Bess seems to be unable to see that the person who loves her is Samuel (Colton Ryan). He understands her, is honest with her, and even complements her musicality. But Bess is blind to his awkward affection.
And all things bad culminate into a terrible ending in episode 7. Bess and Samuel, after a long hard day of record label rejections, refuse to let their optimism die. But things take a dark turn when Bess and Samuel run into Percy, drunk out of his wits. Percy, unable to recognize his own daughter, shouts at her and runs away. Samuel takes a sobbing Bess home and comforts her.
So, what does episode 8 have in store for us? It’s titled ‘Sea Change’, an idiomatic expression that represents a profound change. Is it possible that this refers to Bess finally considering Samuel as a romantic option? It’s possible.
Even if Bess doesn’t see him in a romantic light, it would be difficult, even for her, to deny that he has always been there for her in good times, and especially in the bad ones. He has always helped her, and he has always been honest with her. He may be blunt and sometimes awkward, but no one can deny that he has only good intentions in his heart for Bess. With this latest incident and a night of being comforted by him, Bess might just take her eyes away from Ethan for a bit and see Samuel. Fans of the show, of course, have been asking for this for a bit now and maybe they will finally get what they want.
On the other hand, there can be a few other things that would fit the episode title. Percy might once again give up on alcohol. That would be a big change. Without alcohol, Percy is a loving and doting father. And it would only need him to overcome that one hurdle to make life better again. It could also signify Bess finally getting a record deal -- one where both her voice and her songwriting are recognized and appreciated.
There are lots of significant changes that can crop up in the upcoming episode. Yes, things can get darker still. But something about ‘Little Voice’ promises that they won’t.
