Spoilers for ‘Little Voice’ Episode 7 ‘Ghost Light’

Apple TV+’s musical drama series ‘Little Voice’ took the show’s emotive quotient to a different level in episode 7, ‘Ghost Light’. Bess (Brittany O’Grady) is tired of rejection. After going to a bunch of meetings with record labels and producers, all she gets in return is disappointment and anguish. None of them seemed to think she is good enough. Some thought she had a good voice. Some thought she was a good songwriter. Some thought she lacked the X-factor. And the one that thought she had all of it just did not know how to sell her. But Bess did not give up.

Despite the stream of rejections, she and Samuel (Colton Ryan), seemed to be hopeful for a better future. But there was something neither of them could have foreseen. Bess runs into her father Percy (Chuck Cooper), who is in such a drunken stupor that he doesn’t even recognize his own daughter. Percy shouts at Bess to go away, leaving her in tears. Samuel then takes her to his own home, where he comforts her through the night - holding on tight and not letting her feel alone.

For fans of the show, who have long been wanting feelings to ignite between Bess and Samuel -- instead of with Ethan (Sean Teale), the man Bess loves -- this came as a sign for possibilities in future episodes. But not everyone was happy. One fan on Twitter went from happy to uncomfortable in a matter of seconds, between the scene of Samuel holding Bess on the street after the incident, and the scene of Samuel holding on to her in bed.

The fan wrote, “I like Samuel but his actions make me like him less. I don't know why. I'm just glad that he was there for Bess, but dude, don't take advantage of the situation.”
But was Samuel taking advantage of the situation? Bess was in a deeply vulnerable state. And all Samuel did was comfort her so that she did not feel alone and broken. Fans came to the defense of Samuel. One wrote, “I think it all depends on the perspective you're looking at it from. Bess has this horrible thing happen and Samuel witnesses it and comforts her? I don’t necessarily see where he’s taken advantage of her, but I’d love to hear your side as to this opinion?”

The explanation was, “Oh, I didn't say that he was taking advantage of her but of the situation, to get closer to her. It's just the way that he was cuddling her, I would have preferred to see her on his bed and him sitting next to her. I also think of him, he's a great guy and I don't want him to get his hopes too high. Bess has never shown anything to him to make him think that she has feelings for him. I hope that if he expects a relationship after that night, he won't be too harsh on her and will understand if that's not what she wants.”

But most fans seemed happy with how things progressed. One fan wrote, “The way Samuel immediately comforted Bess and he was holding her while she was crying.”

All the same, some fans were just not hopeful for a good ending with respect to Samuel and Bess. “Like does anybody else feel like this is going to end horribly for sad boy Sam?” asked a fan. “UGH he likes her so much!!!!! and I feel like the ending scene just happened because she’s been going through so much but that’s not fair. Like it was really cute but I feel like they’re gonna ruin this ship and I will sink with it.”

While the general consensus has mostly been fans wanting Bess and Samuel to get together, it will be interesting to see if Bess reacts well to spending the night with him in a moment of vulnerability, in the cold light of the day.

New episodes of ‘Little Voice’ drop every Friday, only on Apple TV+.
