After the custom couture gown that Lady Gaga wore at the 2019 Golden Globe awards was reported stolen by the dress designer, it was put up for auction by a hotel maid who said the singer gave her the attire.

Sara Corea, a longtime housekeeper at the Beverly Hilton hotel, claimed in a letter that opulent Valentino periwinkle gown was left in her room by Lady Gaga after the January awards show and was intended for her.

She added that she did attempt to return the gown to its rightful owner by taking it to the lost and found the department of the hotel, where it was kept for a certain amount of time before being returned to her.

"I work as a housekeeper at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. I'm always present working in the Golden Globe events in January every year for 24 years. The artist (singer) 'Lady Gaga' left me this dress that she used the day of the awards. I turned in the dress to the lost and found on the 8th of January 2019 after the time legally held by lost and found they gave it to me as a gift from her and today I want to auction the dress," Corea said.

The dress was eventually put up for auction at the Nate D Sanders Auctions with the starting price of $8000.

However, the situation got complicated when design house Valentino — helmed by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli — claimed the dress was its property and did not belong to Lady Gaga to gift to whomever she fancied. Beverly Hills police confirmed that the luxury brand filed a report on Friday, October 25, claiming that the dress was stolen.

According to sources, the hotel and designer were working together to sort out the matter. Meanwhile, it was highly likely that the dress will be taken down from the auction block.

A spokesperson for Nate D Sanders told Daily Mail that they believe that Corea was the rightful owner of the dress. "Nate D Sanders Auctions prides itself on having legitimate and correct provenance on all items it places in the company's monthly auctions. We have been made aware of a question concerning the provenance of the Lady Gaga dress being auctioned on October 31," the auction house said.

The statement added: "Our research confirms the dress was given to the Beverly Hilton lost and found department, where it stayed for almost nine months. The hotel, in accordance with its longstanding policy, released the dress when no one claimed the item. The consignor has a receipt from the Beverly Hilton lost and found department and documentation, which accompanies the dress for auction."
