Parents of students at Klein Collins High School in Houston, Texas seem divided over the fate of teacher Kevin Welchel. On April 19, the school fired Welchel after he was caught watching porn in class, unfortunately after the explicit video played on the class projector. He was immediately fired, and now faces a misdemeanor charge, which some parents think might be a bit too much.

Welchel isn't the first to fall victim to modern technology. On March 14, one Western Sydney University professor accidentally broadcast porn during a Zoom class. Similarly, Michael Braeseke was caught watching porn while teaching a Zoom class in December 2020. Pornography became a major headache for Zoom in the early days of the pandemic, as tech-savvy teens and adults repeatedly bombarded meetings with adult content.

However, it appears that in Welchel's case, he was actively watching porn instead of teaching students at the Klein Collins High School. The incident has now sparked a major controversy in the school district, with some parents expressing sadness at Welchel's possible fate.

'It’s really unfortunate that this happened'

Little is known about Welchel, and the incident at the moment. According to reports, the teacher was watching adult content on the school laptop, when it somehow began streaming on the class projector. The social studies teacher decided to watch the content as his students were taking a quiz, according to reports. "The individual was immediately removed and is no longer employed by the district," noted one district official. The official added, "Law enforcement filed charges that have been accepted by the district attorney's office, and all appropriate legal action will be taken to the fullest extent of the law."

Welchel is now facing one charge of display of harmful material to a minor, a Class A misdemeanor that carries a sentence of one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000. Legal analyst Cordt Akers noted, "The defensive to this the only intent he had was scientific or educational, but based on the facts we have I don’t think this material is going to cut that."

However, that appears to have rubbed some parents the wrong way. "He was an excellent teacher and our children loved him so it’s really unfortunate that this happened, and hopefully, somehow it will work itself out," one parent told Click2Houston. One neighbor also chimed in, saying, "Our relations with Kevin and his wife have always been very positive. I think this allegation needs to be checked out thoroughly."

Others, however, weren't as disappointed. "That is something that is very, very unprofessional. Something that is very inappropriate. Something that should not have happened," one parent slammed. Another said, "It’s not shocking because people do watch that and there are sick people out there in the world. They better get right with God." So far, Welchel has not commented on the incident.
